Interesting. They offered the 5 penny set at issue via phone orders in the middle of the night and now they have increased the price twice....the cynic in me thinks they never answered the phone or sold at issue. Can anyone confirm that they got a set at issue price from Gatewest? Anyone? Bueller? For those watching the release, note that the new coins were posted on the RCM website at midnight Eastern time. No penny sets were offered and the 5 oz and Carmichael sold quite a few units in the first hour. I suspect they will sell out today or tomorrow. PS. the Mint's website is all messed up today. Won't load properly.

How can the price go up if you cannot call or order online through Albern Coins or Gatewest Coins?

Does anyone think this set will hold its value over time? It's 1/2 oz of silver for $150! A mintage of 5000 is low, but not that low in comparison to other numismatic coins issued over the years... Of course, right now everyone wants to have one which makes prices go through the roof. But what about six months from now?

Once again, one cannot justify the price with metal content for a set like this. It is the historical 'significance' that fuels the hype here. A lot of people are rushing into this hype now. Will it sustain? I guess only time will tell.

6 months? Yes. Long term? Maybe.
Ag content isn't really a factor. Look at the nuthatch, the dinosaur and even the Ladybug. The first two have no PM and had at least double the mintage. The Ladybug is only an 1 oz of silver but sells for crazy prices (+800 lately).
Of course those coins were part of series but the 5 penny set is very popular (sold out in days) so I suspect it will hold that value for the foreseeable future and settle in at about $200+ long term. Just my opinion.

I'm thinking this set could go even higher than the Ladybug. Same low mintage, and directly tied to old and new Canadian coinage that is now ceasing to exist. Much more numismatic appeal than some bug.

It's available again at Talisman - $199.95 (or $299.95 if you order more than 2). There are only 8 in stock and I guess they'll be gone soon...

Thank you omxfl. I just got in there on time to order one. If they end up like the ladybug, I guess a $50 premium isn't too much to pay. Just buying it to keep though...not to flip.

I know it's been said before, but it's pretty frustrating to be unable to order this coin because I'm not a masters club member, when I'm close enough in spending to become a masters club member if I was able to order it! It's like a cruel joke. So my only option is to overpay for $225 at Gatewest, and still not become a MC member so I have to go through the same thing when the next set of coins is released! Arrggh

You got to be quick. Talisman lists the coins late in the evening - they had 30 sets available and you have to stay up, refresh the site every 5min and then place your order asap. I know it's pathetic, but if you want something really bad you have to suffer first of all! :)

@sixofclubs, I feel your pain. I went through the passage of rites by ordering a lot of crap in the past. They are now sitting in a quiet corner and I've never looked back. If you ordered one of the 5oz, it will bump you up drastically. Sad thing is that you can order it at a lower price from a US dealer. Or alternatively, you could exploit one of the loopholes like some suggest, place a large order and cancel it. The RCM system is dump enough to grant you a MC status and retain it.

Or you have to be patient... you can now buy the 2010 special 75th anniversary of the dollar proof set (mintage of 5000) for just above issue price... the hype is being driven by people who want to make money.

Does anyone think any of these sets will get ripped apart or that people will be content to leave them as a whole since they are all 1 cent pieces?

And if it gets broke up, which will be most valuable? My guess is the Colville.
