Just interested in what people think is a fair/current price for a 1923 half penny in the VG region. A nice brown tone with no verdigris. I'm thinking of getting one soon but think I can only afford a low grade.

Mate you are looking at a minimum of about 1k for a crappy one, why bother Ignore the hole in the album and get what YOU like instead of bending to peer pressure
IMHO if you realy want one of these you have to be able to fork out at least 6k for half a decent one, why bother
This and the 1930 penny are on my " Bucket list " but hay we all have to pay our bills and eat in the meantime.
Personally if I had that much spare cash I would rather buy a whole lot of coins that I would enjoy, Instead of 1 coin I could brag about.
The 1923 1/2 penny and the 1930 penny are made out of unobtainium to my budget and I can live with that

For me it wouldn't have anything to do with caving into peer pressure or having a bragging piece but more to do with the history of that particular issue. I have found it quite interesting reading about the Melbourne mint and this issue.

I saw one today in a shop which I nearly jumped at for $750. IMO it was genuine, having the correct obverse and a fine looking date. It was in the VG region but had a very slight red tinge to the reverse which put me off slightly.

I was planning on getting one in the next month or two anyway but I dont know if I should shop around more really

Enworb if you go to an auctionhouse like Nobles you can pick up a fine-VF example for $1000-$1500 depending on the crowd but on ebay you'll pay 20-30% more for anything without problems. If you can get a VG coin for $800 I would snap it up but as Trout said you can get a lot of other stuff with that money

If its genuine then offer him $700 as I reckon that would be a bargain and a great investment

That is a good price. I also agree that it is nice to have these key date coins. I have one myself and even though its a lower grade than many of my coins, the fact that it is a special date brings the joy of ownership.
