Right now I'm zeroing in on adding these to my collection, as I've got everything since then covered (I pretty much use a "year set" approach).

I've already found the 1890 quarter and half, now I'm looking to go "down the ladder;" to add 1889, then 1888, etc. - and there doesn't seem to be much interest in these coins, if their prices relative to their mintages is any guide. Circulated grades are perfectly acceptable, so long as we're not talking about real culls.

Where are the best places to go looking for these?

Any help you can offer would be awesome.

With the exception of the 1888 s quarter the halves and quarters from 1879 to 1890 are of small mintage's compared to other years and the availability of these coins will be limited and expensive.

HA.com
the bay
I've sourced plenty of SL quarters from there and have been very pleased. Take your time on the bay auctions and wait for the right one to come along, next thing you know you scooped an EF40 or an AU for greysheet...it happens, but patience is the key

to the Forum!!

In regard to Seated Liberty Half Dollars 1879-1890, the mintages are low but most of these coins were saved (not melted), many saved in AU+ condition.

Upside: You should be able to find these years' Half Dollars available through most rare coin web sites, Heritage or even on ebay.

Downside: They are not cheap.

And...

We LOVE coin pictures here!! Please feel free to post your collection!!

Actually both my 1890s are in the Fine-15 range.

I used ebay to buy both - and that's why I'm looking for other sources as it took a long time for them to show up.

AUs or BUs would probably be too expensive - and would stand out too much as the rest of my pre-1900 coins are all like G6-VG8-VG10 or thereabouts (I try to stay away from the really low grades).

But thanks for the suggestions; and I suppose I'm in no great rush - and I'd imagine I'll have to get the nickel 3-cent pieces (whose last year was 1889) too, although I don't think they will be that difficult; and except for the 1882 dime and the 1885 and '86 nickels none of the other denominations will pose any problem at all.

I meant the 1879-80-81 dimes were going to be tough - not the 1882.

But it will be a long time before I get down to those dates, as the quarters and halves will keep me busy for quite some time (and there is an 1889 half on ebay right now, but not a quarter, so I'll hold off for now).
