I'm curious to see what you all think about this coin on ebay. It looks odd to me. Is it the photos, the way it may have been cleaned, perhaps a modern cast coin or something else? I'd kinda like to get it for 17.00 no S&H. I have one here for comparison.

I see nothing to make me suspicious. It is soft, however, and may be porous. If you can get this for $17 including shipping, it's an OK deal. Can you make an offer? If so, I think I would try to get this coin for under $15. But, what the heck, two-three dollars in saving ain't gonna break the bank I don't suspect.

That kind of coin surface makes me nervous because it can be tricky to tell if it is a cast. I am no expert and please don't use what I say as a basis for making any monetary decisions at all, but my guess is it is ok. Looks like flow lines at 3 o' clock on the obverse, and I would like to think that a counterfeiter good enough to preserve flow lines would have the work ethic to put out a cast coin not full of bubbles. I look forward to seeing what the real experts say though, since I am wrong at least as often as I am right.

Curious Doucet => do you already own that 2nd coin example? ...
=> if so, then I wouldn't buy the OP coin ...
=> if not, then I'd wait and find a different coin that makes you feel a bit happier/prouder (more proud?) ...

As more and more people practice their coin destroying overcleaning skills we will see more and more genuine coins with poor surfaces. I note from posts here that more people are becoming accepting of such surfaces. IMHO, the second coin above is worth about 3 times the first. Certainly I have some coins in my collection that look that way but I sure wish they all looked like the second one.

Yeah the 2nd coin is mine. And I'm happy with it. I was considering the 1st one because I thought it might be a cast and I would like to have something like that. So far opinions don't substantiate that idea, which is actually a good thing. I appreciate your thoughts.

But hey, you have to do it to one or you'll never learn. I've done that kind of damage to one, chipped one and cracked up the patina of another. Each one is a learning experience, and I wont be doing that to any more coins. And the coins wouldnt have been worth more than a few dollars if properly prepared. I've taken to only testing new cleaning methods on junks (no identifiable features). As people say, this looks perfectly genuine to me.

I just wrote a long sermon but deleted...
Basically I wouldnt want the 1st coin, real or not and regardless if it is a bargain or not. The second coin however is very nice and quite appealing.
While there is no significant evidence that it's fake there is no real character or anything in its favour and nothing to tell me it is authentic. Given that it hasn't got much going for it even if it proves to be real I wouldn't cherish it.
Just my opinion, and I know budget sometimes decides that sacrifices be made but better to have 1 nice piece like the second than 5 of the one above it.
