The obverse side has a portrait of
Sun Yat-sen, the founding father of the Republic of China.
The Chinese inscription at the top translates as "In commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the Republic of China".
The "80th year of the Republic of China" would be the year 1991.
The reverse side has the outline of a
five-petaled plum blossom. Within the plum blossom are four groups of "double crosses". In Chinese, a "cross" (十) represents the number "ten". A total of four "double crosses" thus equals "eighty".
More significantly, a "double ten" represents the tenth day of the tenth month which would be October 10th. The
Wuchang Uprising, which lead to the founding of the Republic of China, occurred on October 10, 1911.
"Double ten" or October 10th is celebrated as the "National Day" in Taiwan (Republic of China).
Additionally, there are 80 dots along the rim of the coin.
The coin has a purity of .999, weighs one ounce (31.135 grams), has a denomination of 50 New Taiwan dollars, and was produced at Taiwan's Central Mint with a mintage of 500,000.
Another specimen of the coin may be seen at
