Hi all, I've been gone for quite a while finishing up the semester (during which I earned my M.S.), but hopefully I'll be around more often now. Well, at least during the week, since it seems like I'll be gone every weekend for someone's wedding! [:p] Anyway, my father-in-law-to-be and I are working on type sets of North America, which obviously includes Canada. Below is what I have compiled as a circulating coin type set for Canada and its provinces. What additions/ subtractions/ changes should I make? For this collection, we are focusing only on coins designed for circulation, and are trying to include major design and/or composition changes. For example, in our U.S. type set list, there are three types of Indian Head cents: Indian Head, No Shield (1859) Indian Head, Cu-Ni (1860-1864) Indian Head, Bronze (1865-1909) Thanks for any help you can provide! Welcome back, Neuron. You were missed. Your list looks good to me but I'm not very knowledgeable in Canadian coinage. I'm sure one of our resident experts will be by soon, though.

Hi Neuron, Bromac, et al will know waaay more, but one big change in CDN coinage is that the metallic content of the QE2 coins has changed over the past 20 years. for instance, not only have the silvers become clad- nickles are no longer nickel. Otherwise that coin is the same- do you count both? Again folks have different type set definitions, but QE2 protrait has changed several times (5 differnt portraits, I think) Don

Thanks for the welcome back, Susan- hopefully I'll be around more often! Hmmm... interesting info, Don. Based on how we're setting up the US type set, I think we'll probably operationalize both compositional changes and portrait changes as different types. I'll be gone for a few days, so I won't be able to respond for a bit. If anyone has additional information, I'd surely appreciate it! Regards, ~neuron

Hi again Neuron, just to keep sane, you're going to need Krause or the like. They publish a North American edition, which may meet your needs. Just to educate myself, here's what I found for cents, only counting National issues: Large cents Victoria (bronze) Victoria (brass) Edward George V Small Cents (3.2gm through 1980) George V George VI . George VI WW2 alloy George VI 1947 maple leaf after date QEII Young portrait (53-64) QEII 65-78 portrait QEII Centennial reverse (rock dove) 67 QEII smaller portrait, same weight 1979 QEII smaller portrait decreased weight (2.8gm) 1980-81 QEII smaller portrait 12 sided 2.5g 82-89 QEII 3rd portrait 90-91, 93-02 QEII 3rd portrait 125 year reverse 92 QEII 4th portrait 03-
Obviously you may wish to simplify. Pre 1967 seems much simpler than post!

Just a comment - I think the WWII alloy refers to 5ยข coins.

Eek, sounds like it will be a bit more complicated than I had hoped, but that will just increase the challenge. I found a 2003 copy of the NA Krause (didn't know that existed- thanks Don!), which I'm certain will help considerably. Regards, ~neuron

Neuron, I used that list for cents given your IHC example of what you treat as different. Others would know far better than I, but many start with just each denomination and sovereign, perhaps adding the "major" compostion chages-ie large/small cent for George V, silver/nickel 5c (also Geo V). PCGS set registry works this way. They stop at 1967- avoiding all those composition changes-silver to clad, different portraits, Nickel 5c to alloy, etc. challanging but interesting. Provincial coinage makes it even tougher. Will you start with one denomination in each country? Does anyone know what the Dansco Canadian Type set album includes? I tried buit couldn't find that info on the web- I'm sure it's there- just didn't get to it easily... Canadian gold soverigns will be fun! Keep us posted. Don

I'm not sure how I'm going to start just yet- I need to inventory what I've got and see where I stand. Quite honestly, I'll probably start with cheaper acquisitions until I get out of grad school! I e-mailed Don the type set list that I was using some months ago, but it has been updated substantially. If anyone is interested in checking it out, go here: http://www.thebauerplace.com/dave/typeset.htmIt was acting a little funny earlier, in that I had to hit 'Refresh' for the page to display correctly. Also, note that the Canadian and Mexican lists are incomplete and probably full of errors- once I receive the Krause manual I will update them. The US list is essentially complete, although if anyone has suggestions I'd be happy to hear them! Regards, ~neuron
