Here Is Another Egyptian Coin For Dating

Sinbad Valued Member France 98 Posts	Posted 03/17/2007 4:39 pm Hi all another one for dating on this coin I found that to be a Egyptian 5/10 Guerche from the year AH 1293, the Krause World book of coins "1979" that I have got has the Mohammedan year dates in then has another date that I do not recognise, is there someone out there that could help me put a Christian date to this coin? the other dates in the book are from year 10 to yera 33 h. I realise that these photos are not the right way up. Report this Post to the Staff

Stan Valued Member United States 143 Posts	Posted 03/17/2007 7:52 pm It is indeed 5/10 Qirsh. KM# 291. It's from 1293 AH, as you said. That equals 1876 AD. But as I said in my other post, that's merely the ascension date of Abdul Hamid II (1876-1909 AD). We need to find the other symbol that tells us the year of his reign in order to fully date this coin. For that, I need better scans of the coin in the proper positions. Report this Post to the Staff
Sap Moderator Australia 16805 Posts	Posted 03/18/2007 04:27 am The "year of reign" part of the date is written below the toughra (that's to the left of the lower picture) on these coins. It's too worn to read clearly, but it looks more like "13" than any other option to me - making the coin date from 1887. Your options for this coin (KM# 291) are 10, 11, 13, 20, 21, 23, 24, 25, 27, 29, 30 and 33 - these are the only years the coin was struck. Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S.
