1909 and 2012 are NOT directly related to this item

The years that the coins were produced are actually directly related. It may not serve any purpose for a specific year search but you cant say that the years the series was produced is unrelated

I think that even if ebay has some language concerning titles, this would be a gray area. ebay would do nothing and we could banter about it endlessly.

The point is that this practice gives the seller negligible benefit, while making searches difficult for everyone else. I was hoping that with some community influence, they'd see the point.

Oh, also, they have their Peace dollars listed as 1878 ~ 1921. Not sure how that helps.

I have noticed some doing it with Morgans they will put 1878-1921 in the title. I look for 1878 and get every date in between because they will have the correct date and then the 1878-1921 in the title

Edit: I now see I pretty much just mirrored what SeatedNut had already said. At least I know I am not the only one having to weed them out and get frustrated with the Morgan Bandit

Yes, annoying isn't it. If you really want an 1878, you have to wade through all the others. If you really want just any Morgan, leaving the search field blank while having the category chosen works just fine. You'll also get plenty of miscategorized halfs, cents, etc. Another pet peeve of mine.

Extra dates in the title to generate unrelated views. I try to search for a 1909 Lincoln Cent and I get every single one of this guys Lincoln cents regardless of year. He does it with ALL his coins and is quite annoying. Thanks!

Thanks for reporting this listing to us.

I can certainly understand how frustrating this is for you. Regrettably the first violation of the keyword spamming policy is a warning. I advised the seller to remove all unrelated dates from all the titles, if not I will end all listings in violation.

Again, thank you for your report. We appreciate your help in keeping ebay a safe and reputable forum to conduct business.

Sincerely,
Judith

I contacted a seller (Great Southern) on ebay for quite a few inaccurate descriptions on their auctions...they blocked me from bidding on their auctions. That's gratitude for ya!

He's not going to be able to edit the ones with bids, so they will run till they end.

But look at all the ones he listed today.

I'm with scubu here. I'm going to apply the "It's factual" argument in another way. To advertise a Lincoln Cent as produced after the Indian cent in a listing title is factual. To include the dates 1859 to 1909 after Indian would also be factual. However, it has nothing to do with a Lincoln Cent. Likewise, pennies made in 1909 and 1958 have nothing to do with a 1914 cent. Just because something is factually correct in a title does not mean that it is not deceptively soliciting page views.

And yes, policing fraudulent and deceptive tactics online and in the real world is our job. Without it, the hobby can be put jeopardy.

Well it looks like they started using the series dates in their titles again. I let ebay know.
