how do I get this

with the T1i and 100mm lens or if the lens can't do it which one will as I have allot of DMPL Morgans and they look horrible in the pictures

You would have to focus manually. Also, either the newspaper or the coin will have to be blurry. You can't have both in focus. You might be able to get close with a really small aperture, but I don't think it'll get you there at these distances.

yeah thats what I was afraid of. I did manually focus that and if I get the coin in focus at all the lettering can't be seen. I had good success with my P{&SD showing DMPL coins but every coin I shoot with this dern dSLR camera looks horrible

It could be done in photoshop with some effort. What if you try smaller type? No idea.

The reason why it might have worked with a point-and-shoot was because the small sensor gives greater apparent depth of field (for complicated reasons). You can see what happens if you stop your aperture way down, like f/22 or something (however narrow your lens will let you get).

Yep, it's a trade-off between depth of field and light. Try a multi-second exposure with an f/16 or f/22.
