How do I determine how many shutter actuations a Canon camera has? Where is it on the menu, or is there a trick to finding it?

Most manufacturers store the absolute number of shutter actuations in a common EXIF metadata tag. I use a cross-platform EXIF parser like:

http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/

To be honest, even though I use a 7D, I haven't gone looking for a shutter count yet. When I do, I'll check the EXIF data of the most recent photo. In linux (exiftool v8.48) this value is returned as "Shutter Count". This technique should work across all makes and models of digital camera. Exiftool also handles maker-specific EXIF tags that general image processing software sometimes don't have access to.

Magic Lantern will do it. It's not possible to get an accurate actuation count from a stock 550D.

Ray, I didn't mean to scare you off by mentioning linux - Exiftool is multi-platform with pre-compiled installations for both windows and mac.
