Quote: The Chimera was, according to Greek mythology, a monstrous fire-breathing female creature of Lycia in Asia Minor, composed of the parts of three animals: a lion, a serpent and a goat. Usually depicted as a lion, with the head of a goat arising from its back, and a tail that ended in a snakes's head

sorry, when I saved the photo of the statue, it changed the photo of the coin (I had to go back and rename one of them something different) ... my bad ... unfortunately, the end of the Chimaera's tail (the snake head) is off flan ... but I absolutely love the rest of the coin!! (the dove is breath-taking!!)

Thanks guys ... Yah, I think that there is just something super cool about these old mythical Greek coins ... Pegasus, Gryphon and this bad-girl, "Chimaera" ... how bloody cool? (really cool!!)

It is a very nice coin. I have a hemidrachm even more worn than your coin that was one of my first Greek coins when I started cataloging what I had so I have no idea when before 1987 I got it. I always liked the type but never could afford the big one. I will show, however, an obol that I also like even though it has a dove on both sides. You may recognize the dove pose.

Steve--I especially like the dove on that one! FYI--the statue picture posted above is the "Chimera of Arezzo"--from 400 BC! It's one of the oldest Greco-Roman bronzes in existence. Despite being buried for 2000 years, it's held up very well!
