I will look around this weekend for a more sensative scale and then maybe I could nail down at least one characteristic. One thing I am 99 percent sure of is that its not silver. Actually two more things, its no magnetic and about 50 percent thicker than a regular quarter.

So I measured the coin and the diameter is standard for a quarter. The thickness is 1.875mm. my next step will be to weigh the coin and then I will have an idea. The silver coins are supposed to be 5.9 grams.

Bring the coin to Nuphilex. I will have a digital scale with me (accurate to two decimal places), and if we are still scratching our heads, I can test the coin for you back in my lab in Ottawa.

That is great! I am having a tough time with the silver issue. I do not believe it is but knowing if it is silver or not will truly define this coins rarity. What other explanation can there be for a non-magnetic quarter?
Thanks and see you at the show!

I am so excited for the show! I just received an 1859 large cent with impressions of the Vine and leaves on the reverse side and then the obverse has lettering from the other side looks like it was stamped betwen two coins before it got punched! Will try to post new thread when I get good pics. Its hard with a standard Camera!

... sounds like "stamped between two coins" after it got punched - sandwich coin. Please post the pictures

it could be a vise job (what we in the US call it) where two coins were pressed against your coin in a vice or maybe clashed dies where the dies hit each other without a planchet between them and part of the design from each die is left on the other. Of course there is also the slim chance it was struck twice but that is very unlikely since you have the reverse design on the Obverse and the other way around

Will be posting later in the error section. Quick tidbit - the die clash or stamping ocurred before the coin was punched becuase the lettering is very clean and is layed over the underlying leaves and stems. Wait for the post and judge for your self.

Small update: brought coin to a coin dealer near by and the owner very experienced in coins took one quick look and said for sure not silver. So I am still waiting for my scale in the mail and the weight will be the only thing left to find!

So the weight came in at 6.06 thanks to some help at the Nuphilex show. opion given was that it is most likely a foreign planchet. Not sure from which country as I am not sure how to find dimensions of foreign coins produced by the mint in 2000. Thickness also measured at 1.875 MM. Decided to put this one up on ebay as does not fit my collection. Maybe it will find a good home!

Hi JeyRey2000 I have been working on a spread sheet to weigh circulated coin weights and as far as my calculations it should weigh approx. 5.142 grams as per circulated coins....That is measuring at least 5 coins of a certain year and taking an average.

Wert, any idea how to find out which country this quarter was meant for?

SPP is about the only one I know that can determine the metal content of your coin, which is a start.
