FYC: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1873-Indian...em2ec152811fThe date. The surface. And something I can't quite place about both the lettering and the headdress. 99% sure this is fake. AND I DON'T KNOW HOW TO REPORT IT. Anybody here have a different opinion or know how to do it?

Thanks, coinaholic. Looks like everybody gave this one a pass, but eurgh, if it doesn't sell this time it'll probably come back! (That DATE, man . . . it hurts my eyes.)

Erkle, I've been treading on toes for years. It doesn't bother me much.

Quote: The date. The surface. And something I can't quite place about both the lettering and the headdress. And that's the problem. If you can't tell them WHY it is a fake they are not real likely to pull it unless they get a lot of reports on it. Saying "It's just not right." isn't going to hack it.

If you havent reported before they dont put much wight into it but some members with a long accurate history of reporting fakes seem to have a lot more success getting fakes removed

Oh, I can easily say it's "something in the formation of the feathers on the headdress." The problem is that it's something my eye picks up that doesn't reconcile with how the coin SHOULD look, and explaining it is difficult. The best I can do is "the feathers have a clumsy look instead of the longer, full look genuine coins have," and "clumsy" isn't really what I want, either. The eyes and the vocabulary are having an argument, it seems.
The date definitely had issues, though. Aside from dates for this year being ugly (whose brilliant idea was it to add in that cramped date redesign? I hope the Mint never listened to him/her again), the numbers on this one were noticeably uneven and not the same size. There's a slight variation in size in the real copies, but that appears to be a stylistic thing--not numbers actually being uneven like this. (And the surface had that funky look. I almost want to say "cast," but unless it's very badly done, I'm nowhere near good enough to call those from a couple of bad pictures.)

That is how the date punches looked for 1873. The 1 is larger than the 8, so sticks above and below and is also crooked. I don't see anything on the coin you linked to lead me to think it is fake; it just has a lot of wear.

It is not a matter of favoritism, the best way to get auctions yanked is to provide specific details on what ebay rules are being violated and/or specific diagnostics that determine whether a coin is genuine or fake. If the only thing you add when reporting is "coin is fake", then you will never be able to get an auction yanked. The customer service reps are not coin experts, they do not have the ability to determine whether a coin is genuine or fake. If you provide them with actionable information, the rep will either yank the auction for an ebay rule violation or pass counterfeit information to their Coin Community Watch Group(not affiliated with CCF) and then they will make the final determination.

Which makes sense its impossible to be an expert on everything. I actually wouldnt have a problem even if it was a form of favoritism, they get so many reports a day it would make sense to take ones from people who have established their credibility more seriously

Did anyone notice how he said the coin is in gem circulated condition? It looks like it was cleaned and very recently. Ed ANA LM-3175

I wouldn't be surprised if he was CCW himself.

I couldnt remember the sn but I think thats who I was thinking of. Seems like every time you hear scubu mention he reported something the link is dead almost immediately. If he is part of the CCW hes wise to keep it on the down low. Just imagine the amount of PMs he would get

Thats why the staff calls him SCUmBUster (a deviation with a few letters added to the nick he chose when signing up) for his ebay policing ability for getting rid of the Scum. Most of the staff have had personal conversations with him and I can tell you he is not CCW but his reputation in the coin community is usually enough that when he reports something they know it needs to be checked out ASAP. He doesn't report items "he thinks" is counterfeit, he has the knowledge to supply proof when he does report items

Now if they could just rid the scum that busts open problem slabs and reposts after some doctoring.
