Hey folks. I am extremely excited to start a Morgan dollar Date Collection. I have around 28 Morgan dollars, and thought it would be a lot cheaper to do a date set verses each individual coin.

I went online to coin wizard and ordered the Dansco Morgan dollar Date Folder. Here is why I bring this to the discussion board:

1. I am 8 Morgan's short of having every date for the set. Here is where I need help/advice. I don't know if its best for me to bid on each date on E-bay, or spend time looking at the Gold&Silver shops sorting through there 90% silver.

2. I have also heard that its good to get a magnet to check to make sure they are real. Where would I get such said Magnet? Seeing as how I have never checked any of my other Morgan dollars I figure when I do buy one, I can use it to check all my coins, that are not in slabs.

3. So what kind, and where do I buy this magnet.

I appreciate any of the advice you folks may have. I would be interested to see if any of you have completed this collection and if you have any tips. I should get my Dansco Album I hope tomorrow, if not then by Monday of next week, seeing how I ordered it this past Monday. I promise to take several pictures of the album, as soon as I get it with my Morgan's installed. Thanks a lot for the help!!

I have Morgan dollar Date set myself. When I starting looking at Morgan dollars for a full set, there were many too expensive for my taste. So I put a Date set together, and I sometimes pickup those date/mm I don't have. I am not an ebay user, so I can't speak on that part. I put mine together using online coin dealers and local B&M stores.

Thanks Fuzzy. Have you completed the entire set yet? I was amazed at how much the 1895 Morgan dollar cost. I thought I was going to save some money. So far I haven't seen one on ebay less than $150.00 and thats in bad shape. Thanks for the advice though. I am going up to my local Gold/Silver shop tomorrow and see what they have to offer.

HAHA on the 1895-O Amen to that brother. That's the one I am shooting for also. What Carson City did you go with? Between those two, the rest of the ones that I am missing I should be able to get for around $40.00 or less. Congrats on your set!

Very nice Carson City. How long have you been collecting? I just stared a little shy of a year ago now. It is such and addiction. Thanks for sharing the photo!

I am glad to see another CCF member starting this set.

Do you have the 1893 yet .. seems like it is a harder date also.

I started the set about 18 months ago. Here is a link to my post.

https://goccf.com/t/80643&whichpage=1

I do need to take some update pics for my set, and also look to see if I can update some more of the coins.

My sets runs from 1878 to 1999. I also added a blank Sacagawea page and continued putting a dollar for each year up to current. I will have to check if I am up to date on the Sac's.

Looking at my old post, I can see I have upgraded many of the coins since I last posted. Like a nice AU/BU 1882 CC in the Carson City hole/slot.

It all depends really. Some local shops are grossly over priced some are good. Buying raw on ebay is a little risky.

Providentmetals.com and Silvertowne.com sell morgans by date which you could be more confident in than ebay.

As far as the magnet any strong magnet should do. You can probably get a good one at a home depot type store for under 5 dollars

Hey thanks alot for the response. I loved the link you posted of your set. Congrats to you on making yours complete. I am STILL awaiting my Dansco Album. I figured it would be here by now, hopefully good lord willing by Monday I hope. I ordered it from Coinwizardsupply, and figured it would be here within a few days. Oh well.

Thanks baseball for advice. I did pick up a magnet, and I went to a local silver shop and Picked up another 3 Morgans. These are the ones I am missing now: 1881,1893,1894,1895,1989,1901,1902, and 1 Carson city for the back to complete on the mints. I would like to have it complete by Christmas, but don't think its going to be that soon, especially with the Holidays around the corner.

I promise to put some photos up of my album, and what I have so far. Thanks alot for the advice and comments. You folks are great.

GR58. Your sets look great. So did you add those extra pages into your dansco Morgan dollar date set? I bet that sucker looks sharp. All my Morgans that will go into the folder are not in the best shape at all. I would like to focus on getting them all first, then maybe update them later. I had recently been buying off E-bay mostly graded morgans from MS-64 to MS-65. But your talking 50-100 per coin.

I hope that this collection comes without hitting me to hard in the pocket book. That 1893, and 1895 are going to be a killer. I have seen a few Carson City's in used shape go for around 40-50 bucks. As they say Rome wasn't built in a day. Thanks for sharing your information, and thanks for your service. I see you did 20 with Air Force. I am currently Active Duty Army serving 9 and half so far on active duty. 10 and half until retirement. take care.

Thanks for your comment Josh

My album is a Dansco Dollar date set. It has pages for Morgans, Peace, Ike's and SBA dollars (one each year)

I did add the blank Sac page. I know I put quite a few of the Sac's in it, but I will have to dig it out and see which ones.

I am sure I have all the holes filled, except the Sac's.
I guess I will have to take a look at it and see which ones I need to upgrade.

Also ... thank you for your service .. these last several years could be a tough time to be in the Army ..

Thats awesome on your dansco. I wish I had seen that album vs the one I purchased. Oh well, I suppose I could just make another one, or create my own dansco. When I ordered this Dansco, I also purchased a ASE dansco. I don't know how hard it is to add pages to these books, but I'm sure I can figure it out.

No problem on service. I am just blessed to be able to serve. Spent 39 months in Iraq with 1st Cavalry Division, did about a year and half at Fort Bragg with 20th Engineer Brigade (C)(A), and now I am living outside Fort Jackson, South Carolina serving the next 2-3 years as a Drill Sergeant. Life is good, atleast for now.

Josh ... just added some update pictures to my post ..

WOW .. 39 months in Iraq ... in my opinion .. you have done your share.

I spent several months in the Saudia Desert .. 1997 ... that was enough for a Air Force guy ..

I bet that Drill Sergeant duty .. could be quite interesting

MAN!! You have done some outstanding upgrades!! I think alot of folks are going to "borrow" your idea of adding those Sac. Dollars at the end.

Yeah on 39 months. Thats what my wife, and family say, but I know guys who have done that plus 2 or 3 years in Afghanistan or Korea.

Awesome on Saudi Arabia. I got to visit Qatar A.F.B back in OIF II which was around Jan 2005. We were supposed to fly into Kuwait, b/c our year deployment was up, but due to flying around for 3 hrs, a flight that should only take 1 hour from Baghdad International Airport, we found ourselves landing in Qatar. Man I was only there for 14 hrs or so, but was loving what I saw!!

I haven't signed in on leave yet. I just PCS'd from Bragg to Jackson. I am on 30 days PCS leave, and actually sign in on 8 Oct. Thats why I have been doing all this coin hunting, and board forms. I am sure once I sign it, I will be a ghost on here from time to time.

Glad we could spark your old Dansco Album out. I along with many others really admire that set you put together!! OUTSTANDING!!
