My very first coin I ever bought at a coin shop was a 1878 Morgan dollar. I have had it for at least 8 years. I have only collected occasional coins from the US Mint since then. Anyways, I looked it up on ebay and saw that a 1878 Morgan goes for about $25 or so for AG condition. I paid about $10 for it so figured that's not too bad. But I was at a coin site that lists all coins and their mintage numbers and it said the mint mark was on the back and I saw it says CC, so I looked it up and it is actually the rarer of that year :) I am so happy. So my coin is worth more than I thought. I know it's not a ton of money but it was an exciting discovery for me. I am still way too scared to go to a coin shop and buy something. I know I would mess up and overpay. But I would sure love to get a Morgan dollar collection going one of these days. Maybe after reading these boards for awhile I will get brave enough. Hope you don't mind me sharing my excitement with you! Ruth

Ruth, there are a fair number of us Morganphiles here on the forum and we can share your excitement! There's nothing like a Morgan to get the adrenaline flowing! Carson City Morgans are my specialty and whenever somebody "discovers" a new CC, I'm very happy for them. You can find many other Morganfolk in the Coin Grading Practice section of the forum. If you really want to get involved with Morgans, THE book to buy is Q. David Bowers' The Official RedBook of Morgan Silver Dollars. This is my Morgan bible. Fred

Nice going on your Morgan dollar, and I know that if you get next to some of the siler dollar collectors here on the forum, you will be buying with confidence and putting a Morgan dollar collection togather before you know it. So read all about them and ask questions. I'm betting we have a few people here who can give you some good answers. Happy collecting.

Thank-you Morgan Fred and OldDan. I will look for the Official RedBook so I can get started. And I will keep reading the boards and learning :)

You mentioned being afraid to buy from a coin shop. I understand what you mean, however once you find a good one, you can always buy with confidence.
I totally trust my coin dealer, and never have a second thought about buying from them.

Don't worry about going to a coin shop, all the coins have prices on them, everyone pays the same amount. Everybody pays too much!!

Just think of all those poor, lonely coins in the glass cases. They need a home, too! So head on over to your coin store of choice, get to know some of the folks there, and see what happens! hunter
