Ok I am moving into Seated Liberty coins for my type set and I have noticed a trend on ebay. It seems that they run a lot lower than the suggested guides or numismedia put them at for a lot of the coins and grades especially on the quarters. I was in the coin shop today that has very fair prices and for what they had there in a VG I could get the same coin on ebay in a VF. I definitely want better grades I am just wonder why this particular series the Seated Liberty quarters run on a grade or two people price guides at least on the quarters (haven't looked at the halves that deeply yet).

So rather than get just a VG at the coin shop I went with a nice Fine 1904 Barber half for $28 that I will upgrade later (I figured a nice XF Barber half would be one of the last coins I would do because of how expensive they are so for the barber series I have kind of done fillers for now because I think a Barber series coin looks really nice in a Fine grade where as a Seated Liberty coin looks horrible in anything lower than a VF as her head turns into a blob. Plus since I am doing a separate lower end type set for my little boy of just the 20th century coins these lower end barbers will end up in his type set when I upgrade later down the road).

The goal is to do an XF or higher type set and try and do nothing below a VF (I could see myself having to go VF on a few coins like Liberty Seated dollars or Trade dollars) but it just seemed strange that the Liberty Seated quarters fetched a grade or two below guides anyone else notice that?

i agree

my first venture into collecting has been ST\tanding LQs and SLDs and I have 18 examples of Quarters and 47 examples of dimes. 80% come from the bay, raw and slabbed. I have them all for below FMV but certainly at greysheet so there is accurate pricing to a certain extent at that level

Well, virtually all raw coins on ebay sell well below what you will find published in price guides, or online guides. That is because there is always a risk in buying online because you can not view the coin in-hand. Blemishes, scratches, and toning are all difficult to capture in a photo. Also, it is often very difficult to judge whether a coin has been cleaned or doctored just by looking at ebay photos.

Well I guess that is to the buyers advantage, you can usually tell details not always if they have been cleaned but at least grade. So far I have done pretty good with ebay with a 1883 no cents Liberty nickel BU, 1943 Steel Cent BU, 1986 Commemorative Liberty Half and 1982 Washington Commemorative half.
