My local dealer called me today and told me he just got in a unique silver bar.

I know that they poured bars in various styles over the years at the San Francisco mint but I have to admit I'm not to savvy on these.

Can anyone help me with specifics and value?

Thanks

Also the bar has a number on the side, 178

I've seen them with the purity at .9995 but never at .99975

I can't tell you any of the specifics, but these sell for premiums far above melt value. It's truly a cool item.

edit: Thanks for sharing! I really love items like this.

I have seen one that closely resembled that and the owner would not consider getting rid of it regardless the cost.

Ive seen a few online. A 6 ounce once on heritage sold for almost 400 bucks and a 21.48 ounce one on great collections has a starting bid of 2500. Yes 2500. A lot of 5 oz ones on heritage also went for about 800. They seem to command quite a premium over spot

Recent sales on ebay show these bars fetching over $2000 with similar weights.

This bar has a very beautiful golden/rainbow tone to it

I'm just wondering if an approximate age can be ascertained by the stamps.

BWT here is another pic of the edge.

If you looked at old auctions with dates you may be able to guess an approximate date if theres distinct looks to the different years, but other than that without using chemicals or something to date it I dont really think youd be able to pick out a specific year unless theres a data base for the years of the serial numbers, but even without that I could see narrowing it down to a time frame just not a specific year
