Hi all

Had these coins ? for some time now just wondered whether these are circulating coins or just bullion coins? and if the people in the USA and Canada grade these too and what grade would you give these two? I would give the US one a about proof and the Canadian one a about proof too as there seems to be some corrosion on the surfaces.

Can't answer the Canadian coin. The US coin is an American Silver Eagle( ASE) and is not a "circulating" coin. You have a regular strike and not a proof as far as I can tell from the pics. As far as grade, no clue. Somewhere between MS60 and MS70.

The ASE is in fact a bullion coin, but they are graded and treated like circulating coinage in that respect,, your coin is a Mint State coin not a proof, Proof is a type of minting process that results in highly polished fields and frosted devices,( and now also the reverse proof issues with higly polished devices and frosted fields)

ASE grade -- these coins leave the mint IMO at a normal grade of about MS-67 ,, there will be exceptional examples that may grade 69, and many have been slabbed at MS-70 the opinion on this grade will vary and is for another conversation,, anyway these coins at a standard of about MS-67 can only go down based on care ,handling, and environment,,

your coin looks like it is pretty much as it left the mint except for the toning, I think the grade would be in the MS-66 range.

the canadian coin , according to my guide is not a proof strike coin either ,, but it has some distracting marks and would make the coin grade at MS-65.

of course these are my opinions and maybe challenged by other members ,, so I wait along with you for other replies.

I have to agree with Metalman, the ASE should grade MS66.

This year in february our Belgian post decided to sell both coins for 27 Euro apiece
and 4.5 euro shipping cost .

ebay germany is flooded with these coins for a bit more then half that price

So I would definitely say bullion unless the year or the grade make it special

Oh I forgot we Europeans all have to pay tax on silver for the moment it is 7% in germany I think
