In the spirit sharing knowledge with the CCF family ... I am writing to share my observations of a counterfeit commemorative that sold today on the Bay to an unsuspecting collector for $261. Hoping this fake did not sell to any of our valued members. The coin was listed as a 1-day auction from a seller with limited feedback and the always red flag of 'no returns'. I was made aware of the auction by a valued CCF member who knew of my interest in this circ coin ... Here is the E-Pray listing ... http://www.ebay.com/itm/1935-HUDSON...p=true&rt=ncCompare the seller counterfeit coin to my genuine PCGS MS66/CAC example ... It took me a bit of time to figure it out ... but the easiest indication of fake can be observed by looking at the details of the good ship Half Moon . Note that on my genuine example the front sail extends beyond the edge planks of the ship ... and that the middle sail has a series of ropes that also extend beyond the edge planks ... In general the entire profile of the seller Half Moon screams fake ... a saw-tooth silhouette in the counterfeit as compared to the genuine coin. Now that we know it is a counterfeit we can find many other discrepancies ... observe for example the detail in Neptune face and ask why it is so strong given the apparent circulated grade. Lesson I suppose is buyer always be armed with knowledge ... and that is why so many of us so freely contribute our valued time to the CCF family. David

Let me start by saying if I misunderstood your description or missed part of it and you already mentioned it disregard my comments. Both the front and middle sails seem to be missing the ropes entirely on the underside connecting them to the ship and the water seems to be missing detail as well. It also strikes me as odd that a coin thats supposed to be so worn its missing details that the lettering is still sort of pristine looking

That is not even close. The person that won this auction has a 1731 feed back score. You have to wonder if they knew it was a fake or if they have a collection riddled with things like this.

Wow, that side by side picture really shows how different the two coins are... I truly hope that whoever bought this coin is a collector of counterfeits. Really is too bad how many fakes are out there.

Could this be a contemporary counterfeit, one that is possibly worth the price? SteveCaruso, where are you?

Interesting to see a counterfeit of it.
The color of the counterfeit looks really strange too.

the lettering is off as is parts of the design. I don't know if I would have been able to catch it without it being brought to my attention as I am not a huge commem collector but looking at a known good example beside of this one it is easy to see the differences in the design in different areas

And isn't this why, Bryan, that the CCF is so important to us? Each of us shares our knowledge with everyone else, and while we may not be familiar with a series, every topic helps us to enrich our overall knowledge about coins. While commemoratives may not be on my want list, I enjoy looking at them. To see the series through the eyes of another makes me feel good. And if even only one other collector, having taken this knowledge to heart, avoids the pitfalls of the market place, well then, the members of the CCF have done their job well!

Does the Red Book have pictures of all of the earlier commemoratives? If so,comparing the pics in there with any potential purchases would be prudent...

Yes the RedBook does have pictures of Commems in them and that would probably be a good idea since we now know they are making counterfeits of them as well
