For those interested in having a look at images of an uncirculated 5SG half-eagle before making a purchase decision, here you go!

The color of the actual coin is a bit less "gold" than the US Mint web site's artist renderings, but exactly as I expected based on purchases of previous issues.

(Note: Any marks/discolorations seen in the images are either on the coin's capsule or my scanner's glass - the coins are mark free.)

Nice! I prefer uncirculated over proof.

Well... it looks like the laser is working! That is one crisp sharp coin - I like the shape his hat has and the braiding and the eagle are well defined! Now if I could just find the money to buy gold...

All of these are VERY crisp and definitely have a bit of a different look to them.

Commems on a bit of a side note how did you get such a good picture from your scanner?

@basebal21: Nothing too fancy.

1) I scan at relatively high-resolution (at least for images that are destined for the web). I scan everything at 600 dpi or higher, and let the CCF Image Optimizer do its thing.

2) I've found that the bright light of my scanner can "wash out" coin images when scanned using its default settings. So, I decrease the brightness setting slightly and increase the contrast setting slightly.

That's about it, no PhotoShop magic. (I don't own the software!)

Commems thanks for the tips. Any advice for trying with a slabbed coin? Everytime I've tried with one of them the label always comes out blurry. Though I've never tried the CCF image optimizer afterwards. Thanks again.

Rest in Peace

@basebal21: I've scanned dozens of coins in slabs (including all of the ones I included in my classic US commemorative posts) without any blurring of their label so I'm not sure what may be happening with your scans.

I wonder if you are having a depth of field issue related to your scanner - maybe it is too narrow. I'm not sure how to address such an issue - sorry!

FYI: The CCF Optimizer is a compression tool, it won't help sharpen an image. If the image starts out blurry, it will still be blurry after the compression algorithm runs.
