I have an 1880 CC morgan in The GSA holder. I checked the 2007 RedBook and have tried to get an idea of its worth. I dont plan on selling just curious. I took the coin to a professional coin dealer to take a look. He offered $360.00 for it. I'm wondering what would be the true price ( ebay etc..) do think it would be worth? Do you think he is asking a fair price for this coin? I know you cant see it and it is not graded. It has some scratches on the face and some toning on the reverse. But it is in the origingal case and the COA is included.

I think this might be a good way to find "honest" dealers. See who would give the fairest price......

You can also look up PCGS.com according to them at MS 64 it's $1500, most GSA's are MS 64 grade, so according to that he is trying to rip you off. My advice would be to get it graded and sleep over it for the next 10 years.

Just a few words from the wise, a coin dealer is almost always never give you a fair price for your coins. You will always be able to sell it for more to the market, if you have the resources to do so, that is. The dealer has to make money, so that coin could be worth quite a bit more.

There are many variations of the 1880cc. Completed ebay auctions show anywhere from $500-$2000. I think it's definitely worth investigating what variation you have in your hands.

Hi gonefishin,
It would be great if you could get someone with a digital camera to photograph your coin so you could post some images. I wouldn't be surprised if some Forum members were willing to offer more than your dealer.
In defense of dealers (I'm not one, but I know a few), they want to buy low and sell high. How low and how high depend on the dealer and you are wise to shop around for the best price. If my local storefront dealer (a very honest guy in my opinion) offered $360 for your coin, he would probably expect to be able to sell it for $450 or so. That to me would be a fair mark-up. You could probably sell it for $450 too, it would just take some time and effort. As always, you have to decide whether you'ld rather have the coin or the cash. Personally, the 1880-CC Morgan is a great coin and I'd want to hang onto it for awhile!

Sheet on an average '80-CC is around $425, but the real wholesale market on these is more like 85% of bid. Therefore, you should certainly not accept anything less than $360. Actually, the GSA holder should add another $10 if you have the certs and original box in nice condition. These coins are awfully common, even in nicer grades. It would have to be a REALLY nice MS-64 or better to bring any kind of premium over that.
