It's not a very attractive coin. If I were to spend that kind of money, that coin would have to scream with brilliant mirrors and cameo.

It looks like he's basing the pricing on w/Rays variety. Since that is the rarer of the two varieties (only approximately 25 produced), he is way off base with this one. There were 600+ proofs minted of the one without rays. I don't know where he got his info that the one he has is the rarest Shield nickel proof, but it most definitely is not. It's a shame. That's a lot of money in listing fees for a coin that won't sell.

I emailed the seller and here is what I got in return. Apparently, this is a new variety:

Hi Susan
I listed this coin to give the collector the real information of the without rays proofs. There are two kinds of without rays proofs. Have you read David Bowers new nickel book? The coin I have has a different reverse than the more common no rays proof. You have to look at the star placement. This reverse is called the IIo or style C reverse made from a handmade die. They only made 25 of these and they were released on Feb. 5 1867 as the first 25 proof sets from this year. The with rays proof were never official releases. There are between 50-70 of them counting first and second strike.
It is just going to take sometime before the public gets this information and the coins should move up in price alot. David Bower quoted them as being the rarest Shield nickel proof second rarest to the 1913 Liberty.
If you need more information Just let them know
THANKS for checking out my auction.

If that is the case, this guy is completely missing his target audience for a little known variety of a high end coin and killing himself with listing fees in the process

I think it would make alot more sense to list a research-heavy coin for Shield nickel specialists in an auction with a firm like Heritage, Stacks, Superior, etc.

That thing needs to be in a full color major auction catalog, not swimming in the dregs of eBay

I agree. I wouldn't have listed it on ebay. Heritage would have been the way to go.

Thanks for that info Susan! I was amazed what was being charged for this. I couldn't even imagine the fees associated with this listing.

Check this out:

Even with that in mind, Heritage has sold two of these types in the last year, at no premium. I feel for the seller.
