I got this silver Augustus coin in a collection I purchased last year. I was wondering if it was genuine. It is about the size of a US dime and weighs 3.7 grams. What are your opinions. Thanks for all the help.

The coin looks real to me. Let's see what the others think about it.
I think it's this ID.
Augustus Denarius. Lyons mint, 2 BC - ca 13 AD. CAESAR AVGVSTVS DIVI F PATER PATRIAE. laureate head right / AVGVSTI F COS DESIG PRINC IVVENT, C L CAESARES below, Gaius & Lucius standing front, each with a hand resting on a round shield, a spear, & in field above, a lituus right & simpulum left (in "b9"-like formation). BMC 533, RSC 43. RIC 207.

As Gil says it looks good but this is a much faked coin, I'll have a look in the online databases to see what I can discover.

The coin seems genuine in both size and weight. You can see small die breaks around the legend. Nice coin. Cudos. I havent checked any fake data in it but I dont see the need as all seems well.

It's official. This is the oldest coin in my collection. One on ebay did very well. I'm happy. There is a gouge on the base of his neck. Maybe an old shovel or trowel strike. I'll live with it. Thank you all for the help.

The collection I've aquired will be used for emergency retirement funds. Hopefully, this won't occur for many years. Currently, I'm a buyer, not a seller.

Well I cant find anything that worries me in the know fake databases. With coins like this (Well known, higher value coins) its always worth checking as some of the fakes are astonishingly good. Thankfully, collectors search these fakes out and record them.
A very nice thing to have in your collection.

I have the sister coin to the OP. The biggest difference is the position of the simpulum and lituus. One is slightly more rare than the other, but I can never remember which. Personally, I like the portrait on your coin over mine.

Quote: The collection I've acquired will be used for emergency retirement funds What I meant was the coins I've accumulated over the years will be used for retirement. I made it sound like I bought one big huge collection. I wish for that too. Thanks to all for the help. She's going to the bank vault tomorrow AM. It will have good company.
