In my quest for Morgan knowledge I was hoping to see some pictures, graded or ungraded, of cleaned Morgans - dipped, whizzed, brushed, etc.

Anyone have anything they don't mind sharing a picture of?

I did some searching on ebay to find some examples of different "types" of cleaned coins.

1) One of the easiest things to look for are hairlines across the coin.

2) Another obvious thing to look for is very "un-natural" shine, and "haze" around devices.

3) The third example, is when there is toning or dirt in "hard to reach" places on the coin. For example, in the hair details, or around letters.

4) Coins that have been dipped too many times, will have no (or very little) remaining luster.

I hope this helps.

Wow, thanks for the research!! I've seen examples of each of these types of cleaning and now have a better idea of what to look out for.

I have one Morgan which has a few very fine scratches on the field portions of the obverse, but nothing on the face or lettering. It doesn't look harsh enough to be brushed, and I'm not sure how one could only scratch the flat portions. Does that sound like cleaning, or more normal wear and tear.(I know everyone prefers pictures, but I'm not that electronically literature.)

If it is a Mintstate coin, it could possibly be die polish lines.

Pictures would definitely help, and they aren't they aren't that difficult to post.

I currently own approximately 10 PCGS Detailed Morgans due to some sort of cleaning, if you'd like I could post a picture of them so you can see. I keep these, because they are really good examples of the thin line between cleaned and not cleaned.

After being a Morgan collector over the years I still have trouble detecting some unnormal things that were done to a coin to make it appear better than it should be. And I want to thank all you guys (gals) for your expertise on such matters. I know I've learned a lot here and the more pictures we post for comments the better collectors we become. Thanks

About "hairlines:"
If these were described as "parallel hairlines" I think that it would be clearer.
Something like a wind blowing from a single direction. The vegetation falls over
in parallel rows. A mechanical brush of some sort?
"haze" around devices:
A short, succinct explanation of what I have seen but never quite knew what it was.
'toning or "dirt" in hard to reach places':
I need to study this further. "Sometimes" it is OK but more times it is not.
Canadian-Banknotes has given us a lot to think about. Thanks, C-B!
