Hi, I've had this penny since I've been a kid. Now 47. It has always intrigued me and want to learn more about it and it's value. It is stamped with two backs. One is good the other looks like it was another penny stuck between the die and the blank. The imprint is a reverse of the penny. Can anyone help me. Photos can be seen at http://www.graphichome.com/penny

Thanks, Carl

Very nice! I believe that is what is called struck through a capped die. Basically a coin stuck to the obverse die, and when it struck the next coin, it impressed an image of the reverse into it. Maybe someone else can explain it better, but I'm pretty sure that's how it happened. Not sure of the value, I'd guess $25+ at least based on what I see on ebay.

You have an error that is known as a "brockage". It does involve a die cap but the die cap begins to act as the die, striking coins with an incuse image of the reverse. As the die cap spreads out and gets thinners as more coins are struck, the incuse image that it strikes also distorts and stretches out. The most valuable and desirable brockages are known as mirror brockages are are essentially prefectly-sized mirror images with no distortion. $25-35 would be a reasonable estimate of value.

I vote for brockage.

Struck through a mid to late stage capped die.

I dislike using the term brockage for anything except a very early capped die strike. The first few strikes result in a coin that looks normal on one side, and the other has the same image but incuse rather than raised. To me this is a brockage. After the first few strikes the die cap starts to spread and the resulting coin has one side normal and the other side has and enlarged distorted incuse image. To me at this point it becomes a struck through capped die piece.
