What is unbelievable to you? I lived in both Rochester and Seneca Falls, and am very familiar with the history of the struggle for women's rights in America, where Susan B. Anthony played a leading role in its development.

Susan B. Anthony isn't famous for her atheism, but for her contributions towards the struggle for women's rights. Any study of famous Americans is likely to include quite a number of atheists, since America as an independent nation was founded during the enlightenment when the impact of religion began to wane. FYI -- the motto On God We Trust is imprinted on the edge of the new Washington dollar coins, along with the date, mintmark and the motto E Puribus Unum.

Edix:
"You lived in Rochester and Seneca Falls", I lived in Rochester, NY for about 15 years, working for Eastman Kodak in the early 70's & 80's, any time you want to trade stories about "snow disasters", send me an email.

The atheists still use our money even with the motto on it. The motto "In God We Trust" is still on the coins even if it is on the edge, that attracts more attention than if it was on the obverse or reverse doesn't it. madspec

What a very interesting site. The American Atheists have put a positive spin on what is Atheism
"Atheism Teaches That... There is no heavenly father. Humankind must protect the orphans and foundlings, or they will not be protected.
There is no god to answer prayer. Man must hear and help man.
There is no hell. We have no vindictive god or devil to fear or imitate.
There is no atonement or salvation by faith. We must face the consequences of our acts.
There is no beneficent or malevolent intent in nature. Life is a struggle against preventable and unpreventable evils. The cooperation of humankind is the only hope of the world.
There is no chance after death to "do our bit." We must do it now or never.
There is no divine guardian of truth, goodness, beauty, and liberty. These are attributes of humankind. We must defend them or they will perish from the earth."
Still, "In humans we trust" doesn't have the same "ring" to it.

Wow - I believe all of these. Maybe I'm an aithi-method-ist:
Humankind must protect the orphans and foundlings, or they will not be protected.
Man must hear and help man.
We have no vindictive god or devil to fear or imitate.
We must face the consequences of our acts.
Life is a struggle against preventable and unpreventable evils. The cooperation of humankind is the only hope of the world.
We must do it now or never.
These are attributes of humankind. We must defend them or they will perish from the earth."
As a dyslexic, agnostic, insomniac, I spend most nights sitting up wondering if there really is a dog.

At this point, the topic has veered from coin discussion and has the potential to become very volatile and offensive to some. I request that this thread be allowed to die.
