A group of us from Ottawa drove down and spent the day at the Boucherville Coin Show. Some dealers are variety fanatics, and most of them don't like to discount much from trends prices (5% at the most), but I was still able to pick some cherries that they missed:
- 1859 large cent, really crud-filled 9, but with all the secondary markers for a 9/6 variety in VG-8 - 1876 large cent full serif T in AU - 1940 cent doubled 0 in MS-64 red - 1931 5 cent, probably MS-62 (in a 2x2 flip labelled EF-40) - 1969 nickel dollar, with a variety that I did not know about (strongly doubled DOLLAR on reverse) - some nickel dollars with the date and DOLLAR doubled from 1982 (voyageur) - some interesting exonumia pieces, including a 1972 coin celebrating the Geological Survey of Canada (where I work) - a real score for me!!
Lots of raw material to hunt through, I only made it through about 1/4 of the dealers. Only 5% off of trends!!
They must be living in a dream world and I would say, probably didn;t sell anything (that was not a cherrypick) for those absurd prices.
Don't they know the Canadian market is in the tank right now?

@ SPP-Ottawa,
You say : " .... discount... ( 5 % at the most )... I only made about it through 1/4 of the dealers ".
Maybe 5 % for few dealers, but I certify that you are not lucky, because I know some dealers, at the Boucherville Coin Show, that discount 20, 30 and also 40 % !
This was not a good day for you !

Actually, if you look at the varieties I picked up (unattributed) or mis-graded coins, even at their prices, it was a good day!! Nothing like cherry-picking a dealer who thinks they know it all...

I have yet to go to Boucherville, but it's definitely something I'd like to do at some point next year. I can relate with the satisfaction of cherrypicking something from a cocky seller, it always feels nice. Knowledge alwayas pays off, that's what I say :) I don't doubt that there's more reasonable sellers there as well, like doubleeagle said, they wouldn't sell much. As far as cherrypicking goes though, I somehow have the feeling Nuphilex will be better (or at least I'm hoping so):D:D

I like the smaller shows, you tend to get the smaller dealers out, with stuff that has not seen the sharp eyes of variety hunters at the larger shows. I still am a collector at heart, and it is fun being on a bourse floor out hunting, instead of being behind the table.
PS - 1500th post (already)...

Thanks for the info, I'll try to stop by saturday,
@SPP. if you are coming from ottawa, I suggest you try the new highway 30, there's a paying toll of 1.50$ for a car but you save a lot of time in the montreal traffic. plus the jonction of the H30 and H20 is right there in boucherville.

It is a decent sized show, at least 20 dealers and a small auction, run by Lower Canada Auctions (Louis). Leave the nickel dollars alone though!!

Great show today. Picked up some fantastic exonumia on the bourse, and in the auction I won the lot of 1992 25-cent original mint rolls (12 rolls, one for each province/territory) for $140, less than $12 per roll. I hunted and bought stuff for my collection today, instead of acquiring inventory, and it was fun.
