I think it could be a black beauty.

I read (on another coin site) that if the coins get circulated they will appear splotchy over time.

black beauties are on nickels and come from the late 1950's.

The color will be uniform on the coin.
Not really black but like a dark gun metal color.
The color will also go deep into the coin as it was
an annealing problem. Here is my one and only.
They are scans so not real great on the true in hand color.
And also they are not all mostly MS coins.

so is the OP nickel a cirulated Black beauty? will the color of a real black beauty stay even with cirulation? and make his just some type of enviro damage?

If I do a google image search on 'Black beauty Jefferson nickel', I will get a lot of gradations of color. From the uniform black of Indian1's beauty (pun intended) to a handful of speckled ones like mine. So, I guess i'd like to see what happens to Indian1's coin after 50 years of circulation.

well thats what gets me about the speckles many PMD coins get mislabled on ebay and I aint too sure it is not envro damage
