Hello,
I have been leafing through my new RIC and think I get the gist of it, but this one I am not sure about. Here is the coin:

Is-This-A-Pellet?
Divus Constantine I, SMALA mint mark.

To me it looks like a pellet above the end of the mint mark, but it might not be. Under a 30x loupe it looks obvious, notsomuch under 60x. RIC 8 has SMALA and SMALA(pellet) for potential mintmarks but the way the book has it suggests the pellet follows the mint mark, however, it isn't explicit about the location. I looked on wildwinds and acs, but haven't even been able to find a picture of the pellet version (RIC VIII Alexandria 22). Is this a pellet that I am looking at, or is it just an irregularity with the metal?

I would assume the pellet to follow the last letter in the mintmark, otherwise it would say the pellet is in the field (either left, right or center).

That is what I was thinking too, but this RIC is a little...non-intuitive in some of it's explanations. Thanks.

It does look like a pellet, but I agree that it's in the wrong place. Until we find a know example I would not dismiss it just yet.

I have found a few issues with this series and RIC VIII so far. I know not everything is in there, but there seems to be a bit of a grey area between "unpublished" and engraver error. I have one that is missing the 2nd G for AVGG, one with a pellet where there should be a star (assuming it is the version with the star, there isn't one with a pellet in the sky) and this one. I will keep my notes on them to see if I encounter any others like them.
