Please help me to authenticate this coin. I know from previous conversations that these Illyria cow and calf, AR drachm are heavily faked. This one looks genuine to me, and I have a chance to buy at a decent price. What say you Greek experts (you too Jerry)? Also what value do you place on such a coin?

ahaha, Bing ... *whateva*

Ummm, my coin hasn't been authenticated by Sear, so I may merely be posting a fake for you to compare your fake coin against? ... but hopefully not ...

Firstly, our two coins are quite similar in the fact that they are both poorly centered (hey, we're coin brothers!!)

Dyrrhachium AR Drachm
Date: 200-30 BC
Diameter: 18.2 mm
Weight: 3.2 grams
Obverse: Cow suckling calf; corn ear right, torch above, [grapes below].
Reverse: Double stellate pattern within double linear square.
References: Ceka 70

... your example has Nike while my coin has "a torch" above ... my example also has "corn" right ...

... sadly, it is difficult to compare the two coins for they both have varying visible letters on both sides of the coin (I hope this helped you out, rather than clouded the matter?)

For the record => I can't believe that you are trudging around in the Greek section!! (it's awesome) ... especially after your potential brush with Deniro (you're like a racoon that's discovered beer!!)

I would like to get a high power loupe into those ?edge cracks? I would like to have a good look at the metal disturbance within them.

Style to my eye, not 100% with it, but OK.
I guess that you are happy with the weight.

These coins on VCOINS can be pricey, but they can be bought cheaply as well. If this coin genuine, it would be in the higher price bracket.

Ancient coins can suffer from silver crystallisation, (can lead to edge chips). Can't see any evidence of that here.

Try bending it. I have detected fakes myself by doing this!

Yeah dem raccoons really like that beer. They are funny when they get drunk (not like I would ever be cruel to animals, but, hey, the Germans say beer is food right?)

I don't know about this coin. Yours has that aged silver look while this one looks like it has been polished. I'm just not sure.....

Looks ok to me. Cute Nike on obverse but unfortunately the thunderbolt in exergue is off flan (Ceka 322). These are not the most sought for coins, though a quite nice and scarcer issue, maybe 75 $ ?

I can't comment on the authenticity because I don't have the coin in hand, and have not seen enough examples to make a determination based on style but I do have one similar. Posted in the land animals smackdown.

Illyria, Apollonia
AR 17mm (3.18g) Drachm (Denarius?) c. 229-230 BC
Obverse: ARISTWN, Cow standing left her head looking back suckling her calf
Reverse: APOL and DOY and KA monogram Double stellar pattern in square

This was purchased from what I consider a very respectable seller...MORTOWN...I did pay approx $35 for it.

I just got in from "Sunday go to meetin'". I appreciate all the replies. I have been looking at this type for quite some time, so...with the opinions of this forum under my belt, I think I will go ahead with the deal. Thanks again. Once I have it in hand I will take my own images and post them.

There are a few coins I can eyeball by style, but I'm not familiar with this one.
To my eyes, it appears the silver may have crystallization, which points to old age.
Even if off-center some, it's a nice strike of the bull.

I do not think that the coin is crystallized, maybe a little harshly cleaned, with some faint traces of toning left. The color of the pics is "off-balance", too blue, should look more like this I'd say...

A few small areas reminded me of porosity on my silver coins--but I wasn't making too much of it.

DVC, if that calf is feeding on a bull, then it has a problem and the bull is very happy.
