This medal came from a flea market in Fitchburg Massachusetts. I'm not sure if this person is from there or even the state of Massachusetts. I have send both the Fitchburg museum and historical society emails and am stilling waiting for replies..

Does anyone know who this is...?

Uniface medallions with rough unfinished reverses like this are usually purpose-made for adhering onto or inserting into something - a book cover, piece of furniture, headstone, or something like that. With no mark of origin, it may be impossible to work out.

How big is it?

Size is 94.17mm, weight is 252.8 grams.

One of my first thoughts was a plaque of some sort just as you mention sap. What made me think it may be some thing else is that for such a high relief obverse there is no wear and on the reverse there is no sign of any adhesive residue. Although the reverse is rough there is a cross-hatch pattern that can be seen under the microscope.

With some luck maybe the folks in Fitchburg might recognize this person..

Assuming its origin is from there. Without asking the seller and finding the city that this is from you won't be able to find any info on this

That is unless someone here says..."Hey that's my Uncle Bill!"

The image is that of John Joseph Williams, the first Archbishop of Boston who died in 1907.
