Okay, I have been going back and forth on how to start collecting. I was going to buy a big load of uncleaned, but reading on this site, I have now decided to buy some better maybe partially cleaned coins. I also have figured out a few things I like after looking for weeks. I like BIG coins, say 24 mm or bigger, and I really like the look of "desert patina" coins. I am leaning to Greek and older Roman, so here is my first real coin purchase. I know these are all coins you guys have seen, but jut curoius how I did as a noob and spending less than $170.00 total. thanks and look forward to comments, good and bad!

The Ascolon

Obverse: Head of Trajan to right
Reverse: Tyche standing on prow, holding spear on right and aphlaston on left.
Right in field dove, mintmark of Ascalon.
Dated 220 = 116 / 117 AD, last date for Trajan at Ascalon. 23 mm

JUDAEA, Ascalon. Trajan. AD 98-117. Æ 23mmDated CY 215 (AD 111/2). Laureate head right / Tyche-Astarte standing facing on galley, holding scepter and aphlaston; altar to left, dove to right. Rosenberger 137). Near VF,green andpatina.

Julian the Apostate

Julian II "the Apostate" 360-363 AD. Large bronze follis. His pearl-diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right, D N FL CL IVLI-ANVS P F AVG / Bull standing right, two stars above, SECVRITAS REIPVB. A classic type by one of the last pagan rulers of Rome! Large 28 mm.

And my Favorite-the Crocodile!!

GAUL, Nemausus. Augustus, with Agrippa. 27 BC-AD 14. Æ Dupondius .Nemausus mint. Struck circa AD 10-14. Heads of Agrippa left and Augustus right, back to back, that of Agrippa wearing combined rostral crown and laurel wreath, that of Augustus laureate / Crocodile right chained to palm-branch; wreath with long ties above. RPC I 525; RIC I 159. Good VF, dark patina,

Interesting the an the obverse it says Col Nim, most say Col Nem, but I found Col Nim on Wildwinds....

So what do you guys think for my first purchases?

I think you did well ... that last Augustus/Agrippa coin by itself is probably worth $100-$200

Plus, that Julian II is a very nice and cool looking coin (I love the bull reverse) ...

I don't know anything about the Trajan coin, but I'm pretty sure that you did alright for yourself (ummm, but I've been wrong before) ...

congrats

The crocodile is worth $175. What makes a difference here is how much design is on flan and that is a nice reverse. The obverse could be better so that keeps the coin down. The Julian is a cleaning candidate and could be ruined or improved making it hard to price. I don't collect Judaean coins because they tend to bring more than I'll pay for such unattractive style coins. $30?

These are all excellent coins for your first buy. I have been collecting ancients for over ten year and don't have any of these.

I think the Ascalon coin is worth $75 or more. They are rarely nice and this one has lots of type detail, although the legend is weak, as usual.
