Ok I think I am going to save my next couple weeks of coin money and get a Trade dollar for my 7070. My local coin dealer has two really nice Trade dollars, a VF with no chop marks that is a really nice coin for $170 and an AU Trade dollar with 2 chop marks on the reverse for $205. They are actually not that distracting and kind of nice up in the upper right of the coin so they don't mar Lady Liberty. Which would you go with, I like both but and I kind of like chop marks so I am torn as I am not sure if a chop marked Trade would go with my 7070 (it would look great out as a conversation piece) but I really like the details on that AU.

Hard/impossible to say without pictures.

Yes, pictures would show the eye appeal of the rest of the coin, so that would be helpful. I personally prefer one without the chop marks, but if the AU one shows a lot more and nicer detail, then that might overrule about chop marks for me.

I will have to take pictures when I go in next then, I had been drooling over them everytime I was in there because I have never owned a Trade dollar and have always wanted one. And these seem fairly reasonable in price. the Au is a 75s and the VF is a 77.

...also ensure that they are certified by a TOP III Third Party Grader! The Trade dollar is probably the most counterfeited coin around since they circulated so widely in the Orient.

I was faced w/ the same exact dilemma a few years ago. The first coin was an 1875-S in AU-58 for $345 or an 1876-CC w/ a few non-distracting chopmarks on each side in AU-55. I ended up getting the 76-CC due to the low mintage of only 509,000... and it was a CC which I hadn't yet had one of in my collection. Either would've been great to own, but I chose mine due to mintage factors.
I'm sure you'd be happy w/ either. Good luck!

I believe I would rather have a chop mark hidden in the design except way out in the fields of the coin where it draws your eye to them every time you look at the coin

Chopmarks reflect the history and story behind the Trade dollars. That's what they were made for... to ship to China to compete w/ the other types of T/Ds circulating at that time To me, it doesn't matter where the chop is located as long as it's cleanly hit and attractive.

If it were me, I would buy the VF. If the chops aren't that distracting, go for the AU. Peronally, I prefer clean surfaces with no damage.

Without seeing the coins and going with what usually pleases me, "VF with no chop marks" would be my choice.

I like Trade dollars with no chop marks. But I have a coin friend that wont own a Trade dollar without chop marks. He has some that are almost covered with the marks. According to him the Chop Marks add to the history and to the eye appeal. To me they just look like after mint damage. To each his own.

sirdizzy, have you decided yet which coins you're going to purchase? The VF or AU chopped?

Not yet I am starting to save for them today (I donate plasma twice a week, my coin purchases normally come out of my plasma money but a lot of times I also take a little out of check too for extras) I will have enough saved by the 29th in 2 weeks to get them ($60 this week and $70 next week plus $20 on the 29th and then I'll just kick in the extra). I want to examine them closely before deciding right now I have only looked at them through the case so I haven't seen the reverses. They are also raw (and while I trust the coin shop they have been great to me over the years and are very knowledgeable about what they have) I am going to do a lot of research on how to detect counterfeits. I plan on taking a magnet in with me and they also have a scale there and I will want to weigh them. I am going to go in next Monday to get some good pics of them, that way I have a week to examine the photos as well. A week will also give me a chance to detect which ones I like more after examining the photos.

I agree with you, Captain Morgan. I understand and appreciate the history, but I prefer not to have them.

If I were just buying one to not put in my type set I would totally go with the AU with chop marks and send it off to get certified. But since its for my type set I am kind of leaning towards the vf problem free. But I need to examine them more first and I need to decide if the extra detail is worth the detraction of the chop marks in my type set. heck I might eventually get both if I like them both and send the AU off to be certified.
