I've just recently come onto a Shield nickel that has me a bit puzzled.

Question-On-Shield-Nickel

In the shield there appears as if the coating has flaked off. Does anyone know what I'm seeing here?

Thanks,
Terry McManus

It looks like a planchet flaw referred to as a lamination or it could be what is called post mint damage. A closer view of that area is needed to determine which it is.

Yes, that is a lamination error. Unfortunately, small lamination errors decrease a coin's value. Even large ones are generally passed over by most collectors, but some error collectors would pay more.

The pictures are a little over exposed, but I assume this is a uncleaned UNC coin. With that error I might only value it as an MS-61. Still quite nice though.

Thanks. It is a beautiful coin. I got it for my 7070. I really like this design, but wasn't quite sure what was going on. Thanks again.

Interesting the copper is showing so strongly, as if it were just plated. Looks to be a RPD there, the last 6 is mighty blobby.

That is a really nice coin. The last digit of the date, looks awkward though.

Yes, the date looks different. Blown up, the first 6 doesn't look complete on the left side. There appear to be die cracks in several places as well, possible contributing to the lamination peels. What is that on the right side of the coin? More lamination peel, or PMD?

I was really curious about the strong copper color. It does almost look plated. When I get back to my computer, I'll get back with some more shots of the date and rim.

It's a beautiful coin indeed but I'm not a fan of lamination at all :(

I've attached a close up of the date and the left of the coin...not sure on the date, but it seems more lamination on the left hand side...
