Several days ago I did some nickel searching and as posted, I discovered an entire roll of uncirculated 1967 nickels. Another roll was fulfilled with pure nickes including a 1938 and a 1940 nickel.
These coins turned out to be real and magnetic.
However, when I was going through some of these rolls again, I used my magnet to pull out US coins. On my third and fourth rolls, I discovered that five nickels (1983, 1989, 1991, 1999, 2001) were not magnetic and were felt lighter than the other ones. The sound on the metal hitting another one also sounds quiter.
Has anyone here also found something like this?
The thing is: who would be interested in counterfeiting nickels? They could have been utilized for magic tricks but there's still Copyright of the original design. The portraits, dates, and details of these NM nickels seem not any different than the normal ones.
Is there a possibility of the coin struck on wrong blanks?

In the Charlton Catalogue, Numismatic Issues, that you did not consult, there is a comment on compositional changes to the Canadian 5-cent coin starting in 1982.

Oh sorry. I thought that the 25% of nickel still makes it nmagnetic.

Nickels between 2000 and 2006 are made from either copper/nickel or steel so you'll find some of them are magnetic and some are not like your 2001.
