Up until a year ago, I have bought non Aussie Coins from sellers in the US but have discontinued this through sheer exasperation from the following problems experienced.
1) Payments by Paypal
There are sellers who will not accept payments by Paypal if you do not have a confirmed address. Some sellers will not accept the explanation that it is a Paypal ruling that unless you are a resident of the US, you cannot have a confirmed address.
2) Shipping
Have been ripped off a couple of times when I have paid shipping by Global Priority Mail only to find the items shipped here by ordinary mail and it took a couple of months to get here.
3) Location
The one that takes the cake was an enquiry made to a seller in Nevada about shipping charges to Australia and this seller wanted to know where is Australia.
4) Shipping to the US only
Now and then I have come across issues I would loved to add on to my collection, but had to bite my tongue when the seller will not ship out of the US. This issue alone has been discussed in a lot of Forums about prohibitions imposed by your and our Authorities in the posting of coins.
I am sure there are a fair number of us from Downunder who will love to buy from the US, but given the problems, it has deterred us from doing so.
Hopefully from this thread and from any discussions that may ensued, sellers who are members of this Forum might look at their listings and allow non US buyers to participate in their auctions through a relaxation of their TOS. Who knows, competition from Downunder may may realise better prices.

lim118, Other collectors in Europe whom I trade with encounter some of the problems that you do. In many cases they win the auction and have it sent to my address here in the states and I then ship it on to them. Don't be discouraged as there is always a WAY and plenty of U.S. collectors willing to help you out. I also buy regularly for collectors in Europe. They send their wish lists and we then trade for my needs when I purchase their needed items. Ends up being one big trade and every body is happy. Next time you find something U.S. that the seller won't ship out of the country feel free to email and we can see what we can do for you!

RE location: During the last Olympics a person who was answering the phone for tickets to the events told a person from New Mexico that they were only accepting orders from addresses in the United States. Us Americans can be very ignorant of our own geography.

Lim, I agree that it can be frustrating to purchase from US sellers on ebay. 1)Payments by Paypal: The reason for sellers not accepting payments from interntational buyers is that, put simply, Paypal will not protect the seller. In the case of a dispute, the buyer will always win. Paypal is in the process of putting a procedure in place that will allow Canadian and UK residents to have confirmed addresses. However, US sellers are not protected shipping to confirmed addresses anywhere else but the US. This is Paypal's rules and should be modified, but until they do, I don't see a change coming. 2)Shipping: Any seller who ships overseas by a method other than Global Priority is doing themselves and their buyer a disservice. It is always the best practice to get packages to their destination as quickly as possible. A flat-rate Global Priority envelope costs $5.00 to ship without insurance. There is no reason to use an inferior method. 3)Location: I can't even address this. Some people just need help breathing. 4)Shipping to the US only There are a number of reasons for sellers who won't ship outside of the US. One of them would be the Paypal issue. Telling people over and over again why you don't accept Paypal can get old real fast. Many of these sellers aren't aware that there are other methods of payment that can be accepted that are just as convenient for the buyer (though the buyer ends up paying the fees). There are also those who think that the paperwork involved for overseas shipping is very complicated. It's actually very simple and can be completed in about 2 minutes. For sellers who do their own postage at home, the forms can be done online and the package completely prepared for shipment without going to the post office except to drop it off. Small sellers are not going to go to the trouble of learning these processes. Personally, I would love to be able to accept Paypal from overseas buyers, but all a buyer has to do is say that they didn't receive it, and even if the seller sends it signature required and has the signature to prove it, Paypal will find in favor of the buyer. This has happened over and over again to sellers that I know.

Susan, I have shipped all over the world using good old air mail and quite frankly see it very hard to beat? At times it is more costly that Global Priority but it hasn't let me down yet. I learned very quickly from collectors in Europe where Registered Mail is an absolute must to keep packages from disappearing. We probably take our mail service for granted but after dealing with some of the foreign mail services I realize we are as close to heaven as we can get on this matter. It also amazes me that I can get an air mail package delievered to the Netherlands in 4 days and I am lucky to get a letter to California in that time? The only time I am really concerned is during the holidays and I try to avoid shipping anything any where after Thanksgiving! I guess when trading there is value coming and going so it lessons the threat of a big rip-off but I do understand where you are coming from. I have been really lucky in the last 4 years as I have never lost a package and have received two from Belarus that took forever but none the less the seller did what he promised. So far, so good! And, I have purchased coins from Australian and New Zealand sellers as well and they are about as safe a place in the world to do business! You can count on the folks from down under!

Hey lim I too can understand your frustration as when I visited the USA on a job I was surprised to find that on TV the foreign news was what happened in another state of the union or where the marines were operating..hopefully we can change this perspective in the forum by dealing with real people ie fellow collectors, not businesses etc. [:p]

The suspense is killin' me. Where is it? Probably 30% of our Australian buyers send us green, cash, US money. Usually brand spankin' new consecutive bills. UK, same way. Just got $156 the other day.

Lim Now you know what I go through in reverse. 1 There are many sellers who won't accept payPal either. I have two accounts one in the USA and the other in Australia. To get money into my Aussie account I have to transfer it from my american account. If I want to pur money in Westpac to do a bank transfer I have to transfer money from my Us account to PayPal - 3days and then from Paypal to Wespac another 7 days- ties up the bras for a while. 2. Shipping You won't believe what some of the buggers try with shipping charges to the US. I have even had to have my relies receive parcels and post them to me. I will repeat again for any member of our Aussie forum with more than 25 posts (real posts) I will act as the receiving agent here in the Us and post the parcels to them Quick smart (American global Priorioty mail is only US$5.00 for most of the parcels I have had to send. I charge no fees. It is my pentience for being her in the US. 3. Location Isn't Australia connected to New Zealand by that Bridge? Just being cheeky. I know where the Sunburnt country is but I now reside in the Unattached Suburb of Australia 4 Shipping to the US/ Australia only Even though most postings say that and so do the internet adds, once I have contacted the sellers almost all of them have agreed to ship over here. Just remember. I'm willing to be a no charge anent as long as the items are legal. And I only charge postage and payment can be made by paypal or BSB ( I won't bother explaining that to the rest of the forum) or I can be bribed with coins- Like you I am at a disadvantage. I never find Circ AUS coins in my change at the shops, do you ever find any Yank money in your change? - Thought not As for prohibitions - never mail a coin mail a token or a numistmatic item and they usually will leave you alone. By the way sometimes when I am seeking something on ebay it does not turn up and I have to go to ebay.AU and there the bl***y thing is it is all in how the seller list it. I will share this much with you almost every Aussie item I have tried it get on ebay from the UK is usually way overpriced. Cheers

Though not often (thank God for that)as collectors, we do come across a coin that is a MUST HAVE and sure enough, I came across one a couple of days ago. Have a Look However, there were a fair few obstacles to overcome, eg payment from an international bidder & posting to an "unconfirmed" address, before I can purchase this coin. I would like to take this opportunity to publicly acknowledge the assistance I received from Richard (rggoodie)without which, the purchase would not be possible. Many thanks Richard, this is one very big favour that I will find difficult to repay..

Interesting. It is Australia that prohibits the shipment of coins to you. Here is a list of the items that Australia will not allow from the US. http://pe.usps.gov/text/imm/immicl/...lab_012.html

Following is a post I made at the Aussie Coins, Tokens & Banknotes Forum that I feel is appropriate here as well. ============================================================= Quote: The hoops and hurdles we put ourselves through to obtain certain issues for our collection. Much has been said about unsatisfactory auction sites, unscruplous sellers and the postal/delivery service but the biggest rort merchants of them all are the Banks and bill paying financial institutions like Paypal. It is great that Richard has raised this in the Forum. The purpose is not that we both are having a whinge but to make members aware of the problems you can be faced with from our recent experience. To put matters in the right perspective, I recently came across a coin that I must have (yes the Brockage)but was faced with the problems of a) seller was located in the US b)Seller will not accept payments through Paypal if the buyer do not have a "confirmed" address c) Seller will not accept payments by credit cards from an International bidder. Normally, when I read this sort of conditions in a seller's TOS, I hit the back button immediately, but caved in to my overwhelming desire to acquire this coin. First step taken was a hasty email to the seller requesting a relaxation of his TOS expalining that I am a verified Paypal user but I do not have a "confirmed address" as I am not a resident of the US (Paypal's policy). No response was received from the seller and I attribute this to the fact that it was the weekend and people do have a life elsewhere. This auction had a BIN option and I did not want to lose it whilst I was waiting for a response from the seller. Out of desperation,I contacted Richard to seek his assistance. Richard was magnificent in his response to my plea for help. From heaps of emails that followed, it was decided that the best course of action was for him to BIN the item in the States. Next issue was the question of payment. We thought that the best course of action was for me to transfer the funds to Richard's Aussie Bank account. That was when the real problems started. It took close to 36 hours for funds to be transfered from a Westpac account to another Westpac account. It will take 3 days for Richard to transfer the funds from his account to his US account with a limit of AUD$500.00 in international bank transfers. As the price for the coin was more than AUD$500.00 two transfers would be required emanating in more delays and more bank fees. We then decided to abort this system of payment and took a new track by the transfer of the funds in US dollars into Richard's Paypal account.Transfer was immediate but we got slugged USD$ 28.00 by Paypal for using their service and I suppose Paypal deemed the transaction as an auction and just took the money from the funds transferred. We have both grown a lot wiser from this experience and amrelating it for other members to learn from it. Overall, given the obstacles we had to overcome and the additional charges I had to fork out, I am extremely pleased with the purchase....to me it is worth every penny. More important was the manner in which a member of this Forum has responded to the plea of assistance from another member...this is what comradeship is about. Unquote:

Amen! I use to help out people while I lived in Germany. They didn't have PX access, so I would just do the shopping for whatever and deliver it to them.
