I am down to one single Fifty Cent coin (that I own. I still have a long way to go to fill the album!) to place in my Dansco Album, and although I'm 95 percent certain, I could be wrong, so would appreciate some assistance.

The coin is 2001. On the reverse is the Kangaroo and Emu holding the Coat of Arms. Below is the word "Australia," and below that is the number 50.

My guess is that the coin goes in the space labeled "2001 Federation." Right? Or not? If not, please advise which space it should go in.

Thanks for any help.

Correct. That is the generic (ie non state or territory) centenary of federation coin.

Yep. That's the one (KM# 491.1). I assume your album has 9 other spaces for the 9 other "Federation" coins issued in 2001 (one each for the six states and three territories).

Trivia Time: this coin was the first Australian coin to ever show the "technically correct" coat of arms. Heraldry nitpickers had found flaws and errors in all previous attempts (George V silver coins, the Kruger Gray designed florin and the "normal" 50¢).

The Heraldry Society in England were so pleased we finally 'got it right' that they gave the 2001 50¢ Series an award for heraldic excellence. To quote their press release:
quote:
The panel was particularly impressed with the beautiful, imaginative and accurate display of heraldry in the Centenary of Federation coin set and has made a special award to the Royal Australian Mint for the excellent use of heraldry on the coins and in the display binder of the commemorative issue.

Sap, Yes it does have those nine other spaces. And, thanks for the interesting information.

I refer to it as the National Federation design and the others as the State and Territory Federation designs.

Oh, BTW, it is found in three formats - the circulation and mint set coin and the gold proof coin which have all of the design engraved on the reverse and the cupro nickel proof coin which has the design colour pad printed onto the flat surface of the reverse.
