Hey folks, got a question for ya! A buddy of mine has an old coin I'm pretty sure it's a large cent 1827. The coin is not really worth much as it's in really poor condition. But my question is did they stamp some of these coins? cause all the stars & the date & the letters are pressed or cut into the coin & not raised like all the pics I've seen of them online. Anybody ever seen one like that? any input would be appreciated! Thanks, RLW

Would definitely need to see a pic of that thing! You mean the legends and stars are punched in ("incuse"), but the bust or head is standing out in relief, like a regular coin?

Here is the front of the coin. If you could zoom in somehow you could definitely see where the stars & date look cut in instead of raised.

Tough pic to work with. I can make myself believe the stars look incuse; the bust and the rims appear raised. Will have to give it some thought.

Long exposure to a weakly acidic solution. The raised features and the fields are slightly different in density and react to the acid at different rates. The raised features reacted a little faster and eventually are eaten away until they are below the surface of the field. I have a 1798 S-152 with the exact same kind of etching. All the lettering and the wreath are etched into the surface instead of raised.
