I would say either AU-58 or MS-62 Brown depending on whether it has a touch of wear on the high points of the obverse - I can't quite tell. Very nice!

sorry for the way I approached this. This is counterfeit made by HK Replica in China. Easy to get caught. Again my apologies for the way I did it. Who else got caught?

What are the markers to look for inthe NFLD series? Seems like HK replicas has been a hot topic as of late on CCF.

Please note... This topic was moved to the Canadian Grading forum because that is where it belongs. Yes, more people will see it in the Main Canadian forum, but not all of those people are interested in grading coins. This is why we separate the forums, so people can focus on what interests them without having to sift through too much stuff that does not. Is it perfect? No, but it is better than the alternative. Now, if you want to broaden the topic beyond grading, we can move it back. I assume that you want to discuss this as a counterfeit?

I would like to see this as a discussion on spotting fakes rather then a grading topic. Perhaps we the title is edited.
What are the markers to look for on this coin?

I exchanged photo's. Now shows the markers that work. Please realize that the counterfeits may be available on any type of planchet. i.e. copper brass etc. Also, error coins also show the same markers. The markers I worked up ARE ON THE DIES! The planchet composition will alter the grainy texture etc. That is why I use the markers. They work. If a coin looks odd, I refer to them.

I must admit, after you posted that it was a counterfeit I tried to find clues in the photos, and did notice that the N and you looked deformed. I certainly didn't notice beforehand, not being an expert on NFLD small cents! Perhaps a more interactive way to educate people on counterfeit coins would be to post a few photos of coins from the same year/denomination and ask which ones are fakes.

I don't recall NFLD small cents in your original counterfeit files, is this one new nickelsguy? What caught my eye was the relative weakness of the reverse devices, the pitcher plants are always fully struck on NFLD small cents, and the leaves of that one are not.

Look also at the 9 in the date. The loop is all wrong, much too small; the date is way too bold. Here is a superb example from the PCGS Registry online (this coin belongs to bosox).

Just a quick glance and I was fooled.Saw weakness in the right side of the pitcher plant, but not being familiar with this series I thought maybe weak strike. I see a weakness in the rear of the crown as well now.

There are some glaring mistakes like the 9, but I could see a collector getting fooled if they're unfamiliar with this coin. Also--check out the skewed "E" in NEWFOUNDLAND. It's very irritating to see these are getting faked! I'm afraid it will spoil the hobby.

OK SPP, (btw, I was actually in Wernher Von Braun's home , also Albert Einstein... come from very close to both... mmm I guess that is why I AM so smart...lololololo) when was this the Bosox coin certified. some of his coins have a very senior cert.... WHO says it is the real McCoy and Nickels Guy, who says that you are correct? ( not at all doubting your reputation) I am just asking these question for educational purposes, for others...., NOT for arguments!! It is easy to say FAKE, another matter to support your claim with details. Otherwise nobody will be able to educate themselves. having received it from HKG does not necessarily mean it is a fake.
