So when is a toned coin really toned or badly cleaned. I sent this beauty in to be graded and it came back "cleaned". What do you guys think?

I think it's a beautiful penny

Maybe TPGs can tell by the spatial pattern of toning whether it has been cleaned. For example, this penny seems predominantly toned on the reverse design, much less so in the fields. Perhaps that suggests that it was cleaned a long time ago and then it preferentially toned over the cleaned parts?

Nice die clash on that Nova Scotia cent...

That's a beautiful NS cent. Cleaned or not, I like it.

PGCS returned it "cleaned"

What do you think the grade is?

Do you mean they refused to grade it on the basis that it has been cleaned at some point?

Cleaning issues aside, I'd estimate MS-63: I can't see any wear, strike is really nice, fields are pretty clean. If cleaning precludes a grade of MS, then it would have to be top AU.

Now that I think of it, has anyone seen a TPG certified coin that is both MS and cleaned?

I thought I've seen coins graded by ICCS that say cleaned under the description. What determines if they will or will not grade a cleaned coin?

CanadaBanknotes,
Most toned coins I've seen have rainbow or sunshine tonings to them.

Although I don't have a Canadian example of something like this, I still favour this one a lot.
Well, I heard that Rainbow toning could be done artificially. This is why I perfer my unique green toning.

That N.S cent has been cleaned with something to remove the natural dark tone,
maybe even silver dip. Then burnished or probably heated with a flame, that will give the blues. Sad, seeing its probably at least AU

When it comes to toned coins, all I can say, is WOW! Now THIS coin belongs in a hard slab.
