I have always noticed that there are very few nicely toned Canadian coins on the market. What are your opinions on toned coins? It feels like everyone wants blast white coins, in Canadian numismatics.

Exceptions would be the specimen cased silver dollars, 1971-1973.

well I myself prefer toned coins... some of the colors are eye popping ... The blast white ones are ok but to me they have no story to tell... I myself have quite a few toned dollars and halves... Some really nice ones...

I've always thought that there should be a topic on toners... Of any denomination.

I bought this set a couple weeks ago. Personally, it seems to me that the Canadian proofs have beautiful toning... This set came in the original box, and both sides of every coin (except the nickel) toned beautifully. I have seen many gorgeous Candian proofs, that have really bright, colorful rainbow toning.

You can get some real beauties in the 1967 silver (red case) or gold (black case) specimen sets.

I remember seeing that set in another thread Dave, I really like the toning. Did you pay a premium for the set? Quote: You can get some real beauties in the 1967 silver (red case) or gold (black case) specimen sets. Thanks SPP, I will look for some.

Yes, I paid over what the set usually sells for... but only because of the toning. It absolutely stunning in hand. Much better than the picture

I had a 72 silver voyageur dollar and a 73 RCMP silver dollar in the clamshell case toned up real nice. They had amazing colours. Unfortunately no photos to show. They sold for $25.00 (voyageur) and $45.00 (RCMP) I took the voyageur to a local coin shop for the owner to see and as I was leaving a customer asked if I would sell it to him. The RCMP I sold on ebay and had to pay shipping out of the $45.00. It was in a blue case with metal coat of arms so the thickness of the case was too large for lettermail.

Dave h, that is a nice toned set. I bet it does look great with the light shining on the coins in person.

How about this? In hand, about 50% violet, 25% blue and 25% green.

I also love to see nice colour on coins as long as the toning is authentic and not created artificially... Here's a few of my favourites... :) Take care, and Have a Great Day! cameron93 Cam's Canadian Coins

True they do seem harder to find, especially nice ones, than American toned coins. I've managed to snag some nice ones here and there though over the years...

Quote: True they do seem harder to find, especially nice ones That's for sure. I haven't seen many sell. I know with American toned coins, some sell for 10x book value (Sometimes more) just because of the colour. If anyone can give a rough estimate, or some examples I would love to see how much more a nicely Canadian toned coin sells for, compared to a coin of the same grade without toning.
