Did anyone watch The Unit last night?

There was a plot line revolving around a rare 1921-D Morgan with some type of doubled mint mark worth $80k-$100k.

As far as I know, the coin is fictitious, but the representation of coin dealers was very uncomplimentary, to say the least.

Comments?

Didn't see it...but Hollywood seldom passes on an opportunity to portray an entire group of people in a bad light. That's entertainment! Still, most of us follow along, and only notice when it's our ox getting gored!

Didn't see it. I also haven't seen you on the posts for a while. Hopefully everything is treating you right.

What was uncomplimentary about the dealers? Did they portray them as "vultures" or something?

In a nutshell:
A particular rare coin was worth $1100, unless it was of an even rarer variety, in which case it was worth $80k-$100k.

The first dealer tried to hide the fact that it was the variety and offered $900.
The second dealer gained her trust by being honest about the value, condition, etc. and offered $87k. While he was gaining her trust with his words, he was switching out her coin and stealing it from her.

Not exactly an endorsement of the hobby.

Tighe, thanks for the thoughts; I did take a break. The next auction in Nashua is Saturday, 31 March. If you're interested, PM me.

Ratsa fratsa. Unfortunately/fortunately I will be in Martinsville for Nextel Cup racing. So not only am I missing the nashua show, I am also missing the Boston Show. You are aware I assume that the Boston show is going on the same weekend?

Regardless, glad to hear everything is ok. I have a very busy couple of weeks coming up, but I will have a couple of free weekends in April if anything is going on.

The particular episode with the Morgan, is it Season 2 episode 18?

Edit, yes it is. God bless the internet and BT.

Well the second dude, the one that switched it, who was he anyway? Not a shop dealer, just some fella sitting on a chair trying to nick business from the coin store by the look of it. I would have told him to go jump and not even given him a look. But that coin sure was burning a hole in her pocket. She would have been better off keeping it for her daughter and letting it rise in value for an investment.

But then this is only TV, it's not real. In real life people would put it on ebay! (along with their grandmother)
Rest in Peace

Don't want to get too much off topic, but speaking of showing people in a bad light -- have you ever noticed that media people are usually portrayed as scum sucking idiots willing to do anything to get that picture or story?

I've had a double career. One as a teacher, and the other as a newspaper writer, photographer, columnist, and editor. In 40 years in the newspaper biz, I've never seen those heartless, non-caring thugs shown in movies and TV shows.
