Last night at our coin club meeting I traded another member a raw XF-45 (my grade) Straight's Elephantine Shoes CW token for a raw AU-58 (seller's grade) Monitor / Our Navy token (F-241-336). Two things about the Straight's token... it was cleaned in the past and when I originally purchased it, I only spent $27 for it. The Monitor token is original BN color and is very detailed. I actually think it might go MS-60/61 if I send in for grading. I personally think that I ended up coming out better in the transaction. What do you guys think?

Sorry, but have no pictures of the new token yet.

IMHO, it's a fair trade, given the condition of the respective tokens. While most Monitor tokens are fairly common, the "elephant" tokens are far less so and prized for that pictorial. Unless the Monitor is red and say a 64 or better, I'd not pay the freight to have it slabbed. You might well spot a few equivalent specimens on ebay, raw and slabbed, and note the prices realized. The elephant tokens are now fetching strong prices; this, considering they're rated R-3's. I've owned many Monitor tokens over the years but maybe only a half dozen elephants!

Since these tokens were both duplicates in our collections, I think we are both winners in the deal
