Hi all,

I am an absolute newbie at coin collecting and I've gotten this coin.
I was wondering what is was.
Im certain the date is 1696.
Also what grade and value would you place this coin?

Thanks again for any responses.

Cheers

Hi Eastwood501 and welcome.

Try William III at wiki and you'll find this coin illustrated (silver crown).
As to value or even authenticity I'll leave to others more expert.

Welcome Eastwood!

Silver coins of William (just like other British monarchs) were of similar designs, and the denominations differed mainly by the size. I don't have the sizes at hand but check out this site.

The sixpences of William 111 weigh 2.9 to 3.1 grammes, and are 21 mm in diameter. Need to confirm the weight and diameter against this information.

The date looks to be 1690, but that cannot be, because his reign did not commence until 1695. There were five provincial mints for these coins.

This coin would grade at about EF.
Tony Clayton lists the 1696 sixpence in EF at around 425 pounds.

Hi guys and thanks for the replies, I measured the coin and its about 0.805 inches 04 20.45mm wide.

On that Tony Clayton size it says it is a 1696, the number 6 on those coins look like a 0.

So if not an EF than a Google would say F-12 (Fine)? I'm learning lol.

So it wouldnt be worth much then?

I would say mid-high VF (Very Fine) to low XF (Extreamly fine). I'm sorry for the spelling of extreamly, but I can't remember how to spell it.

From Coins of the UK, the catalogue value is 100 pounds, which is the roughly $155
