We have seen the TPG make some pretty sill mistakes in labeling coins, but I have not seen one like this before. An obvious Indian Quarter Eagle in an Eagle PCGS slab indicating Surface Damage. Or has the Surface Damage so severe that it whittled down an Eagle to a Quarter Eagle...and people are bidding on it at Great Collections!

The wrong denomination on the slab label is isn't the only thing about this coin that is astounding. Great Collections has it listed with the eagles instead of the quarter eagles and there are as of 11:46am 15 bids on it with a current high bid of $725.00 for a coin that is worth less than 1/3 of that.

Is there a market for wrong denomination slab errors?

I think the bidders on this coin need to find a doctor and get a prescription for some common sense.

There is, but I have no idea what kind of premium that would entail.

Great Collections probably just scan them in without "looking" at them.

Perhaps there will be a job opening for "coin screener"?

I was getting ready to ask if they took it down because it shows ended but has 0 bids showing and since it was said "people are bidding on it" I figured they had discovered the error and took it down

You have to remember that PCGS is #1 and many people purchase the holder and not the coin...
The high bidder can submit it to CAC and ask for a non-gradable football sticker...

If I had the money I'd build a collection of mistaken slabs... And then show the collection each year at the Philadelphia show and the local GSNA show. :-)

Things like this guy are a perfect example of how there is no guarantee for slabbed coins. If you were to try and collect from PCGS for their mistake, they'd call this a "clerical error" and say they're not responsible.

Thanks for the couple of members who let me know about this mechanical error - we have withdrawn the coin from auction and will have it corrected at PCGS before reoffering again. Although we try to stop anything like this from listing, clearly it got past our proofing!

Sincerely,

Ian Russell
