I have a 1898 estados unidos mexicanos 50c
I cannot find any information on it, and especially the value.
I am thinking of adding it to my collection for the coin dealership tomorrow but don't want to "give" something away that may have some value.
I kindly appreciate any feedback.

Hi there,
the coin that you have is not from 1898 but is very modern and currently in circulation (1989). This means that it's only worth face value and have no numismatic value, this coin is worth 3-4c converted to USD.
Thanks for asking.

Agreed about the piece being modern. :) However, the current 50 centavo pieces are smaller than the one depicted here, and do not have the distinctive rim any more. See http://lh4.ggpht.com/_0ZnTiC4CTEc/T...tavos_02.jpg for example. The four in the lower row are the older pieces; the three in the upper row are the newer (2009-today) issues.

Did you ever figure out what this coin is?
I have one as well. Mine is in better condition and easier to read. It is not a 1998. Mine clearly says 1898

Yours is also a 1998. I think they did not make this design of coin in 1898. Yours has to be a 1998.

First off, frenchsquared, welcome.

Both your coin and the other example posted are definitely 1998 50 centavos (KM# 549). I'd judge that what we're seeing here is the result of the first "9" on the die having been re-cut/punched in a rather inept fashion, resulting in that apparent 1898 date. I'm not seeing this recognized as a variant in any of my references, so it's hard to assess how scarce/rare it may be. The overall mintage of this denomination for the year was over 223 million, for whatever that's worth.

Thank you for the help. Poor minting would explain the odd 9.
