This wouldn't work for collector cents but it is mainly for the elongated cents, they want them clean and shiny so it will look better when elongated. I would rather have a dirty round one myself.

if you are going to ruin a coin the fastest method is copper polish and a harsh chamois cloth Cola has gotten phosphoric acid in it , why not use the real thing If however you like 50/50 chance the coin comes out right use electrolysis that is what my friend does and sometimes it works

My daughter's class science project a couple weeks ago was to choose condiments from the fridge and see which one cleaned a penny better. She put a penny in a sandwich baggie with 2 tsp of chosen condiment and put them in the fridge for 1 week. Now she used the dirtiest, yuckiest coins she could find outta the penny jug and I was very surprised at the results. No rubbing of the coins was allowed and she rinsed them by dipping them in a bowl of water. She didn't want running water to effect the cleaning. Air dry. Ranch dressing- didn't do much of anything Ketchup-cleaned and made it shinny, but left bubbles on the surface. Mayo- did better than the ranch, made the coin look cleaner but stayed a dull brown color. Brown Mustard-Made the coin the cleanest, seemed to work the best with the least amount of damage. Kc-masterpice BBq sauce- totally destroyed the coin, ate part of the surface off and made the coin an odd yellow-orange and left pits on the coin. Makes me not want to eat bbq sauce for a while Sorry she had to sacrifice 5 pennys for science, but coin cleaning lesson learned.

Electrolysis works great, one of my lady workers a couple of years ago got her mustache removed with it. If I ever get a hairy cent I will rembember that.

Coin electrolysis works on a 12 volt generator . Are you sure they did not use 130 volt and called it an epilator

Fishnwidow: I don't understand why so many obvious items were not used. Lemon Juice, Orange Juice, Lime Juice, Milk, vinegar, Coke, Mountain Dew, etc. Of course battery acid is my favorite. In chem we used to use concentrated Sulfuric Acid and end up with CuSO4 crystals.
