I do not want to see the cents melted, so I have to admit bias when I say that I hope the melt ban is never lifted. That being said, the melt ban when end eventually. However, I do not think it will end until after the one cent coin is discontinued (which I expect sooner rather than later).

I am in favor of doing things in better ways, so maybe the gov just needs to sell us on any new ideas they might have rather than just steam rolling them over us.

If they want to change from a dollar bill to a coin Id prefer they just did it instead of wasting money with ads for why itll be better. But other things Id much prefer they stay out of

They won't even lift the melt ban on wheats, and most of those are pulled from circulation already! I say most because for every $25 dollar box searched we typically find 10-20 of those, which is approximately 6/10ths of a percent of all circulating cents are still wheat pennies.
Definitely regarding the $1 coin, why did they bother making it if they were not going to start winding down grinding out $1 bills, they could have made it a slow transition. I would have loved watching people refuse to stop using the $1 bill, instead turning them into rags before, reluctantly moving over to the coinage.

Can anyone post a "law" banning the melting of cents? I know Moy when he was director of the Mint had issued a "rule" saying cents could not be exported for melting, but I am unaware of any law forbidding such action. Any lawyers here that can clarify?

Canada has the same kind of rule or law or whatever, that you arent allowed to take a particular amount of pennies out of country. I think I heard $5 worth once..which is 10 rolls. hearsay, but thats all I've heard on the subject.

I wouldnt be surprised if Canada did that too. Its wise of the mints to try and protect coins that cost them money to replace. If you melt or take old quarters out of the country theyre more then happy to get the free profit making more

Isn't there a specific company that supplies the US Mint with the paper to make bills? If so, it is no wonder why the dollar coins didn't work out. The company that makes the paper probably pushed very hard to stop the $1 coins.

"Besides, why are people so obsessed with melting coins, anyways? You can sell them as is." I agree with libertad.

Being in charge of things is definitely one BIG hammer. As far as "running ads" is concerned, it's not necessary. All they need to do is launch an Internet information campaign and then collect some feedback the same way. It would cost a minimal amount and is in keeping with the idea that government exists to serve OUR needs and not theirs.
