Good day. I have had this in the family for some years but now wanted to research more about it. It is a Johnson Matthey 50 oz silver bar. I had a couple of questions. 1) From the Picture is this considered an "early pour" type? 2) Is this just worth spot value of silver is it slightly more because it is a JM? 3) Estimated value? 4) If I wanted to sell it to collector (not just a pawn store) so it will be taken care of, what is good place to sell siver? Thanks!

Also is it worth more because the JM logo is an original (it doesn't spell Johnson Matthey diagonally. It just has the JM logo with the 2 hammers)

slightly above melt per oz because its a JM and its a 50 oz which is an odd weight and collectors like it

I'm not an expert on these but I would say it is definitely worth more than just spot due to being JM. Not sure what the premium on it would be or the date of it though. Hopefully another member will be along shortly to straighten that out. As to the best place to realize said premium I would venture a guess to say sell it on here once you have enough posts. Otherwise ebay or selling it yourself locally to another collector would be your best bet. A pawn shop or coin dealer will most likely low ball you in order to make some money themselves so if you want to maximize your potential you'll need to put in the work and effort to sell it yourself to a collector.

Personally though, I would keep it until I really needed the cash for something. It's a great piece. Unless you want to sell it so you could diversify the moneys a bit. Those are the only reasons I would sell it.

Its a 2k bar.... That is a real fair average for value.... Maybe as low as 1800.... I know of a similar ox 50 oz. Engelhard bar on ebay which has a slightly higher premium listed at 1800 bid in, buy it now 2200 seems like.... I think 1750 is on the low end, but many would want to pay that, considering silver is close to 32 per oz. so that would be 35 per oz.... Probably not gonna find it that low on ebay either, via 1750....

1) From the Picture is this considered an "early pour" type? Early to mid 80's pour. Older bars will say "Johnson Matthey" across the top, and even older say" Johnson Matthey and Mallory" 2) Is this just worth spot value of silver is it slightly more because it is a JM? Has a premium, since it is a 50, it is smaller due to its size. I'd say 3.00-5.00 a oz over spot. 3) Estimated value? 1750-1900$ 4) If I wanted to sell it to collector (not just a pawn store) so it will be taken care of, what is good place to sell siver? I'd try ebay as you're best bet to get top dollar

before you post it on ebay check to see what the charges will be if you do sell it for 1900. it may be better to sell it here for 1800. and that way you know you will be selling it to someone who loves it :) Does anyone have input on the average ebay fees that would be associated with selling this. I know silver hawk sells bars on there from time to time. maybe he can tell you the fees associated with it.

I would say a close estimate for related fees on the bay and shipping with insurance should be ~$180. nlp

ebay now charges 9% of the final value with a max charge of 250 for auctions. Paypal I think takes on another 3 or 4 percent and I have no idea if they have a max or not. You save money on ebay now selling in auctions as opposed to BIN. Even if you knew you wanted 2100 for it just start the auction at that or slightly below and you wont get hit with the higher BIN fees. http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/fees.html

So pretty much if the seller sells the bar for 2000 which seems to be the high for this bar he will pocket near 1800 after fees and than doesn't he have to pay federal tax now on your sales? so that cuts in even more. it would be best to sell it here it seems.

For that hed had to pay taxes, if you sell it for less than you bought it for I'm sure. But in this case the premium is small enough overall that he probably would end up with more in the end selling it here for less than getting top dollar on ebay

While auction fees are 9% regardless of price, fees for BIN are 11% up to $50, 6% from 50-1000, and 2% after $1000. So, to make it easy, lets say it sold for $2K: ebay fees would be: $50*(0.11) + $950*(0.06) + 1000*(0.02) = $82.50 I believe Paypal will take 2.9% + $0.3 = $58.30 Total fees = $140.8, which is just over 7% of hypothetical sales price. Auction Listing ebay fees: $2000*(0.09) = $180. With paypal, total fees: $238.30.
