What is the diff. between obverse #1 and #2?

The easiest way to tell is to look at the inner part of the ear.

I will try and find some pictures, to show you what I am talking about.

ok, is it that the inner ear opening is large on the Variety #1 and small on Variety #2?

The opening of the ear is more circular on Obverse 1, while Obverse 2 is a bit more "abstract"

These pictures are from the Charlton Catalogue. I couldn't find any good examples from ebay that showed the ear well enough.

F.Y.I.: The Obverse #1 for the 1881H dime is quite difficult to acquire. It took me 10 years to finally upgrade to an I.C.C.S., F-15 example.
I.C.C.S., 2012 Population report has NO mintstate examples listed and only a mere 25 examples in circulated grades with the highest being one AU-50.
So drop whatever you're doing and grab one if you can find 'em!
